Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Samerberg Sue, the fracture is right at the head of the Fibula, so i'll take what you said on board.

Stuart Calder seems to get a big thumbs up all round so I'm leaning that way.

NickyJ, that's my thinking, if I'm not happy jump ships. The guy i have is most likely very competent but I know no-one he has cut, whereas I do Messers Calder or London.

midgetbiker, following our telecon earlier have sent a FB message to the friend I mentioned, won't see her at the gym tonight (forgot Real Madrid vs MUFC was on tv!) will likely see her tomorrow. Will advise tomorrow evening latest........looks like Harrogate based Calder or London eh?

Also forgot to tell you the Redeemers were brilliant in St Anton, Dan's even jumped an av barrier, mine just went between them! They get so many looks.......my ski lock was deployed at all comfort, lunch and après breaks just to be safe. Saw more WD's in Arlberg this time than ever before.

good luck!

Nick London is a skier so will be interested that you work in the industry. if you can switch to Harrogate i think you will get a quicker service as it is a smaller hospital. I would go with Harrogate.

midgetbiker, good luck with getting it sorted out - my missed fib fracture and avulsed LCL could have been sorted very quickly and painlessly had it been seen at the time it happened. As it was it took nearly 2.5 years to sort out as well as 5 operations and I had to sit out a whole season. Luckily it was 2006/2007 so I did not miss much! wink

Thanks all, things are moving apace. with Nick London being Harrogate the swap is more onerous so that, plus several personal recommendations for Stuart Calder, means i am off to see the doc in an hour for a referral.

MRI is booked for the day after my return from France.

Now i just have to look forward to 2 weeks of everyone heading to the hill each morning and waving bye bye to a forlorn me.

Well it's apparently a bigger hassle to switch cities so I'm sticking in Leeds. If my MRI confirms the ACL rupture then I will go see Stuart Calder at the Spire in Roundhay then get an NHS op with him.

Right now I'm in CH heading for Chx, with a roofbox full of proto skis I can't test. Been sat in the car for 10 hours and the leg is not too happy about it. At least School of Rock on the DVD is keeping the argueing from the back seat very muted.

Hi everyone,
About two weeks back I had a very pathetic slow fall in deep snow, my foot ski etc went one way and the rest of me the other. Horrible pain in my knee but I felt immediate realief as soon as a friend got my ski off but when I got to my feet and put weight on it something wasn't quite right. It kept giving way when weight bearing. I managed to slowly get down the mountain but no more skiing and lots of ice/heat. I'm now home and been to see a consultant at a hospital near home who I found completely useless and he has told me to just carry on as normal and I've just sprained it! Confused Went to go see my private Physio who has said he would almost put money on meniscus damage. Wrote a very strongly worded letter to the hospital and I'm now waiting for an MRI. Nearly all of the pain I get is on the inside of my knee and it also keeps locking. Skullie I guess what I'm wanting to know is what kind of recovery am I looking at and what can I do in the mean time. For a living I ride horses and am going insane not being able to get on a horse!
Thanks in advance for any tips advice.

aprilhart,

If you twisted your knee skiing, heard or felt a pop, it swelled within an hour or so and it has given way you are 90+% likely to have ruptured your ACL.

If swelling appeared next day much less likely.

The pain on the inside may indicate just a sprain of the medial collateral ligament ( the least severe grade of injury often the most painful)
The other particularly when combined with locking is that you may have torn your medial meniscus.

Doing all three of the above is not unheard of.

MRI may give you your answer but is not a substitute for an examination by someone competent as MRI can underestimate ACl injuries.

Your physio will give you advice on managing the swelling etc but the sooner you get a diagnosis the quicker things will make progress.

It is impossible to give a prognosis ( recovery prediction) without a crystal clear diagnosis.

PM me if you like.

You need another opinion form someone who knows what they are doing and is interested in helping you return to sports.

[quote="Samerberg Sue"]midgetbiker, if you can get Stuart Calder to work on you, you will have one of the best knee surgeons currently working in the UK. Make sure whoever you end up seeing checks out the Postereo-Lateral Corner if you have a fibula fracture anywhere near the head of the fib. Mine was missed completely by a surgeon who was not so experienced and it casued me no end of problems. If the MCL is only a grade 2 it may be left to heal on its own as it is capable due to having a good blood supply compared with other ligaments.

Anyone missing a posterolateral knee injury shouldn't call themselves a knee specialist!

Jonathan Bell, He is a Professor of Trauma Surgery at the Maximilian Ludwig University, Munich, so an ER specialist. Sadly I had no choice due to my Industrial Injuries insurance here in Germany! The top knee orthopod at the same hospital will not work with the industrial injuries insurance schemes as they are notoriously finickity about payments and treatments.

The Pysio in Chx says there is a chance the ACL is ok and the meniscus is torn. I was hoping the MRI would be definitive on this but if not then it makes it even more important (to my mind) that I see an acknowledged expert in the field of sporting knee injuries.

So I am now hard over on seeing Stuart Calder after my MRI, though in fairness my current guy is part of an acute knee clinic and I have recently heard good things about him (just not as many as I have about Mr Calder).

Hi all,

Hope those of you who are injured are on the mend, and thanks for the advice from the rest of you.

I've spoken to some of you in my other thread. http://www.snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=97804&highlight=&sid=0d217698242dbcecfbcfaf63acc931fb
From what I've read I'm moving towards getting a private diagnosis from an expert rather than waiting for the NHS cogs to turn (being self emplyed it might be cheaper to pay for quick treatment rather than lose work and money whilst waiting).

So, can anyone recommend an expert in the Manchester area?

I've driven past this place and seen adverts in the gym. Does anyone have experiences of using them? http://www.thekneedoc.co.uk

Thanks

janeed, the surgeon who fronts this, Mr. Sangiv Jari is listed as one of the recommended surgeons in the area by the Knee Guru web site : http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEnotes/node/2409

The surgeons listed on there are by recommendation and peer-review only, no-one can pay to be listed. The site is run privately by a consultant who was involved in setting up the first specialist knee clinic in the UK (the Droitwich Clinic).

I'm not sure I buy it that the Knee Guru site is as impartial as you make out. At a very quick glance it is missing several good surgeons in our area and includes one who missed a diagnosis on my husbands knee some years ago.

sarah, it is completely impartial as the list is only compiled and updated by the person who runs the site based on patient references and peer-group reviews. The person who runs it is a consultant involved in knee surgery, but is not a surgeon themselves. It never claims to be a definitive listing, more a starting point for people looking for a particular type of specialist.

Sadly not many people send in names for referral so it is not always up to date, nor is it a definitive list, often names are passed on via conferences from other surgeons and consultants. It is the only listing I know of that covers most regions of the world as well which being based outside of the UK I found extremely helpful when looking for a revision specialist.

It is definitely not impartial. It started out as a voice piece for the Droitwich Knee Clinic, whose founder has now retired. When it was set up it included a large number of " preferred surgeons to whom the site linked" but not one of them, was in the UK. It took advantage of link farms to bump it up the google rankings before google objected to that sort of thing. A couple of the " featured individuals" are people I have trained and saw it as " a great place to advertise" I have never approached Knee Guru to be included but my colleague, who did, is. Its quite simple if i give them sage like articles they are quite likley to be published. I thought it was so obviously not impartial that I've avoided it. Perhaps I'd better sign up !!

However as far as i know the discussion forums are impartial unless a knee surgeon posts stuff without being transparent about it-- shudder the thought.

I must confess I don't look at the site very often unless a patient says they've posted something.
I did have one who clearly forgot they had told me she was posting on it and I subsequently saw her post that said she wanted to brain me with her crutches as I had told her she could get rid of the if she believed she could!

She then posted that I was right but it took a bottle of wine to get the confidence. Very Happy
