What technical ski socks do people use/recommend? I need a couple of pairs, ideally reasonably thin.

Have a couple of pairs of Flake socks & they do the job very well... that said, are there similarly quality socks with at a lower price?

KenA, Falke - I and most pals use them, expensive but you get what you pay for and they are excellent.

Smartwool have always done the job well for me.

Another vote for Smartwool. I tried another couple of brands last week, and the Smartwool ones were noticably better, more comfortable and warmer at the end of the day.

I've got a few different ones including Smartwool, Falke and X Socks. I always use the Falke ones out of preference on a short trip-even the thicker ones are great and they were just the job in chilly Tignes the other week. I've put them in the tumble dryer too and they come out fine, I know you're not really meant to put Smartwool socks in the tumble dryer but I did anyway and they were alright but they did shrink a bit. The Falke ones are light to pack too.

If you have a 15kg baggage limit Smartwool are good as you can easily wear them for two days (even three at a push). However they are very thin in the toe area while being thicker than Falke SK4 in the rest of the sock. I start the week with Falke SK5 (very thin but still warmer than Smartwool in the toe area) and then switch to SK4s as the boot liners pack out. By the last day I switch to slightly thicker again (but not as thick as SK2). I found X socks thicker than advertised and home-made in appearance (lots of loose threads on the inside).

Smartwool for Warmth, X Socks for fit and durability. Forget the rest, they stink.

skimottaret, Must admit never had this problem, have had 4 pairs for 5 years + and they are just as warm as when new, and never any ripping issues - maybe a bad batch, not good though eh?

Good stuff, thanks for all the advice. Sounds like Smartwool are the way to go, I thought as much. Is it worth going for the thinnest pair?

KenA, Falke do a full range, see their website. I also have Smartwool socks and have demoted them to mountainbike socks, IMO they are not in same league as Falke for wintersports.

Oh forgot to mention, it will be for touring too, but I don't suppose it makes that much difference. I'll go and have a look at the Falke ones, cheers.
Not sure i like the idea of not wearing any socks at all!

KenA, I have 4 or 5 different thicknesses so I'd decide depending on how well your boots fit and/or how much your feet feel the cold.

A pair of Falke socks ordered. My ski boots are very close fitting, so I probably only need a thin pair.

I'm poor & only use the hire boots when I occasionally go skiing and I'm never sure if I'm getting these marks & blisters because my ski boots are too tight or too loose around my calves. I wear ski socks that cover that area and they don't slip down. Should I make my ski boots tighter? Looser? 2 pairs of socks?
I'm not going to be buying myself any ski boots in the near future, but any other helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Teko,
we replaced smartwool with them a couple of seasons back due to distribution issues and never looked back, the guys that designed for smartwool and owned the company (prior to the timberland buy out) are now working with teko...more durable than the smartwool IMO and all the other benefits

I've used the same 6 pairs of Teko merino socks for about 120 days of skiing. So far, they have shown no signs of wear (e.g. thinning, piling, shrinking, etc.). They are warm, have good wicking properties and definitely do not smell.

I have gone Teko over falke and smartwool and really like em. the smartwool ones shrank and falke fell apart. also the tekos seem smoother and easier to put my boots on and they come in different thicknesses.. that said my missus likes her smartwool as they are warm..
