Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I find that if I lose the ability of performing really good ankle flex its really hard to not get in the back seat and then lose control of the skis tails when coming round. I think this can induce rotation of the upper body too, certainly feels thay way. If I have my boots nice and slack I can braquage for fun, clamp my boots tight and it all goes to pot Sad

rockyrobin, sorry to drag us back on topic, but I've found that packet of Shin Protectors my brothers mate developed.

The idea is that with conventional padding the layer next to the skin will still create friction (shear force) but these pads use a layer of gel between the inner and outer layer so there's no shear force at the inner layer.

Do you need me to bring them on Monday?

comprex, I've just tried my boot on and tried pushing the tongue and it does appear to make a difference. Now when i power forward onto the cuff there's no rubbing. I can also say for sure that my heel is not lifting. It feels like it does move up, but in the same way as you would imagine a suction cup being pulled, it trys to suck itself back down again.
One thing I did notice when looking over my boots last night was that the right hand canting adjuster had been set to upright, probably by mistake when the boots got re-riveted. Bearing in mind i'm supposedly slightly bow legged with a natural A-Frame, i'm wondering if this may have had any input as this was the same boot as my blistered shin. The other boot that was correctly canted only suffered redness.
I've also tried keeping the booster buckle clear of the void between the shell and liner, just sitting above instead. This has left a nice void for me to power into on the booster strap so that the shell comes into play much later in the forward motion.
Fingers crossed this may work this time.

I would suggest that you will keep getting blisters until you fasten your clips up properly. The booster strap is designed
to work with the top two buckles to ensure that you have as little movement as possible before you start to use the
mechanical flex of the boot.

Modern carving ski technique doesn't use fore-aft weight transfer to make the skis turn anyway.

rjs, Thanks for putting me right on the doing the buckles up. I'm really confused why the guy who did my liners told me to do my boots up that way as he put himself across as being very knowledgeable. I would never have thought that buckling my boots could cause me such grief.

When you first use foam inner boots you do need to just put the clips on the minimum setting that keeps them closed.
This will have been how they were when the foam went in.

The foam continues to expand after the foaming process has finished, so you will be packing it down a bit
the first few times you wear the boots.

This doesn't mean so loose that the tongue can move about though.

Sounds like I only got told half the story with what is involved after the event.
I did notice though that one liner feels more snug than the other. I'm hoping that this is just because my feet are different. I've learn't my lesson now. I shouldn't have been so lazy and should have gone to the effort of going down to Profeet to get all this done. I'll give it a few weeks of skiing and see if the liners equal out.
If the liners are not both hugging my feet the same in both boots would I have any recourse on the shop that did the fit? I'm just wondering if foam liners are a bit hit and miss and you have to take what turns out as its a one attempt job.

Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...
If one foot is larger you will get slightly different amounts of foam in the two boots. They will then compress down at slightly
different rates.

My previous two pairs of boots had foam inner boots (Nordica not Conform'able). Both times I got a very good fit.

I would wait a bit before deciding whether anything is wrong with them.

Maybe I'm being unfair to the guy but that goes against everything I've been told when doing the Warren Smith courses

I think that there's only a conflict between what your bootfitter says & Warren's advice at the extremes. Technique does have a lot to do with it but yes a very light person could struggle to flex a very stiff boot. Ruth, my last New Gen instructor was wearing X-Wave 9's & she was no more than 5'6"/10st, probably less.

On my last Warren Smith course there were 5/6 people who couldn't initially flex properly & who were querying whether their boots were too stiff. After practicing the exercises all but one person could flex their boots properly, leaving one very light lady (approx 5'2"/8st) to have her boots cut that night. Also, Phil, one of Warren's instructors is the same size/weight as you & wears uncut 1080 boots.

I feel that I need way more ankle flex to braquage properly compared to when skiing 'normally' on Xscape's shallow pitched slope, which is why I find it such a good exercise for me as I have to exaggerate the movement. Warren's one-legged braquage turns really make you get your thigh high (vertical) & drive your knee forward to flex the ankle etc. Once cracked, especially on your weaker turn side then move on to the standard two footed braquage.

I'd recommend working on these exercises for 10/15 mins at your next Xscape session or two before you make any further flex mods/purchases. It's also a lot cheaper Smile. I'm always in need of this practice & perhaps we could rope in Marc & Beanie1 so could all do the drills together - hey, synchronised braquage, a new Olympic sport Toofy Grin

Cheers Jon,

I think its about time I spent a good hour trying to perfect my braquage like you say. I know, i've been sooooo lazy Sad I'm blaming the sterile environment of XScape for that Laughing I tried it last week and my instructor did say that on my weak side he could see some rotation kicking in from my upper body when I wasn't forward/dedicated enough to the turn.

Sadly I don't think my blisters will be up to doing braquage this Monday as they're still sore today. I tried my foamed liners and I could tell they were going to hurt me again. I'll wait till my legs better before going back to them. Their not going to stop me sliding though with new planks to test out Very Happy It would take a lot more than a bit of pain to do that Smile

See you Monday all being well Smile

Just come across this thread and thought that you all might like to know that a friend of mine cured his shin problems when he went skiiing with his girlfriend for the first time this year.

Over on epic someone suggested my problem is probably due to having to crank my clips to get a snug fit. They recommended i get myself some tongue shims and or shin pads from http://www.tognar.com/boot_heater_warmer_fitting_dryer_canting_dryers_ski_snowboard.html
I've ordered them, so hopefully will see in the next week or two if this is indeed my problem.

rockyrobin, When getting your liners foamed it's quite difficult to wiggle each foot the same amount! At first mine were fine in the left and painful in the right - that then swopped around, and now they're good in both, however I do have to wiggle my foot around quite a lot when I first put my boots on the get the foot in exactly the right spot. Stick with it when your blisters have gone.

spyderjon, I had a pair of XWave 9s and they killed me - nothing to do with the flex though - that was fine! I'm 5'5 and a little under 9st - it's only habit!

easiski, I just tried my foam liners on to remind what they are like:-
The left hand one is real snug round the forefoot but the heel hold is lacking.
The right hand one is also real snug round the forefoot but feels like it is throttling my foot even on lowest buckle setting. There is a nasty pressure point running from below right ankle bone protrusion diagonally across the top of my right foot.
It feels between the two as if one has not got enough foam in (left) and the other has been over foamed (right).
As they are now I cannot see me wearing them ever again. I expected some discomfort but the difference between the two boots is like night and day. It really shows up when you try to put the liners in the shells. The left one is a doddle, the right one is a struggle Sad

Hi rockyrobin. Sliding's going nowhere rolling eyes as I haven't done any since the Warren thing. I'm obviously not dedicated Sad . Sorry, I don't remember anyone from the day. By the end, I was too screwed up about not being able to do anything! I was already working on getting rid of the A frame from last year. But turning it into an O frame, with my knock knees, was impossible Sad . My pole plants were "fairy" and when I put a great effort in I lost balance completely and fell over Sad As for the thigh steering, forget it! I don't have sartorious muscles. Or any other sort. I can hardly lift my leg with a ski boot and ski on the end, let alone wave it around 100 times!

Have you read DG Orf thread about wanting a woman but telling of about a million excuses as to why he can't do anything to get one? Well, I want to be a better skier but:
Lessons are expensive.
I'd have to spend time practising what I learnt.
I have too much fun skiing with my friends to want to miss out - and none of them want lessons.
My other half doesn't either.
If I was a better skier, I'd have to join the "good group" and they're boring old farts who don't have bar stops and lunch. (They sit on a rock and eat stuff they've nicked from the breakfast table.)
I'd have to join a gym and grow muscles.
I'd have to go on an intensive ski camp holiday on my own. And I'm too scared to do that in case I was the worst or I'd get injured and no-one would care.
I'd have to buy some more ski boots - and go through all that entails yet again. (Now on my third pair. They're too loose for any real control but at least they're reasonably comfortable and I can flex them. Feel very sorry for you and your boot troubles.)

Anyway, that's it ! Sometimes, girls just wanna have fun snowHead

Funny how you describe yourself skiing. Your just like everyone else I know - You ski a lot better than you give yourself credit for from what I remember. If you ever get chance to see a video of you skiing you will be surprised.
Don't worry about the falling - I'm starting to do it every time I go too now. I'm next trying to move onto headbutting the safety netting. Done it twice now recently and surprisingly is rather painful on your nut! Falling on the ground is preferable!
You have my sympathy with your boots being sloppy. Thats how I got my black toe nails! I hope that in time you will get yourself into a pair that makes you happy.
