marc gledhill, Never let your lass get too familiar with your kit in the first place! Then she'd be none the wiser when you dragged them out of their hiding place. Its only a matter of time before your good lady finds you out like they have ESP or something. Come clean now before she outs you. It'll play better with the brownie points in the long run

marc gledhill, I thought that was the sort of tactics only us women used, you know the new clothes sneaked into the wardrobe and then tell you guys we've had them for years and that you just don't pay attention!

IncogSkiSno, that just doesn't work I'm afraid.
I know what my wife had when I married her fourteen years ago, she doesn't have any of those cloths now - so it's all new!

rockyrobin, sorry to drag us back on topic, but I've found that packet of Shin Protectors my brothers mate developed.
The idea is that with conventional padding the layer next to the skin will still create friction (shear force) but these pads use a layer of gel between the inner and outer layer so there's no shear force at the inner layer.
Do you need me to bring them on Monday?

comprex, I've just tried my boot on and tried pushing the tongue and it does appear to make a difference. Now when i power forward onto the cuff there's no rubbing. I can also say for sure that my heel is not lifting. It feels like it does move up, but in the same way as you would imagine a suction cup being pulled, it trys to suck itself back down again.
One thing I did notice when looking over my boots last night was that the right hand canting adjuster had been set to upright, probably by mistake when the boots got re-riveted. Bearing in mind i'm supposedly slightly bow legged with a natural A-Frame, i'm wondering if this may have had any input as this was the same boot as my blistered shin. The other boot that was correctly canted only suffered redness.
I've also tried keeping the booster buckle clear of the void between the shell and liner, just sitting above instead. This has left a nice void for me to power into on the booster strap so that the shell comes into play much later in the forward motion.
Fingers crossed this may work this time. |
I would suggest that you will keep getting blisters until you fasten your clips up properly. The booster strap is designed
to work with the top two buckles to ensure that you have as little movement as possible before you start to use the
mechanical flex of the boot.
Modern carving ski technique doesn't use fore-aft weight transfer to make the skis turn anyway.

rjs, Thanks for putting me right on the doing the buckles up. I'm really confused why the guy who did my liners told me to do my boots up that way as he put himself across as being very knowledgeable. I would never have thought that buckling my boots could cause me such grief.

When you first use foam inner boots you do need to just put the clips on the minimum setting that keeps them closed.
This will have been how they were when the foam went in.
The foam continues to expand after the foaming process has finished, so you will be packing it down a bit
the first few times you wear the boots.
This doesn't mean so loose that the tongue can move about though.

Sounds like I only got told half the story with what is involved after the event.
I did notice though that one liner feels more snug than the other. I'm hoping that this is just because my feet are different. I've learn't my lesson now. I shouldn't have been so lazy and should have gone to the effort of going down to Profeet to get all this done. I'll give it a few weeks of skiing and see if the liners equal out.
If the liners are not both hugging my feet the same in both boots would I have any recourse on the shop that did the fit? I'm just wondering if foam liners are a bit hit and miss and you have to take what turns out as its a one attempt job.
|
|
|
|
|
|
If one foot is larger you will get slightly different amounts of foam in the two boots. They will then compress down at slightly
different rates.
My previous two pairs of boots had foam inner boots (Nordica not Conform'able). Both times I got a very good fit.
I would wait a bit before deciding whether anything is wrong with them.
|
|
|
|
|
|
I'll do as you say and give it a few weeks and see how they bed down before trying to get them tweaked further.
Must be patient I guess.
Cheers,
Chris

Just come across this thread and thought that you all might like to know that a friend of mine cured his shin problems when he went skiiing with his girlfriend for the first time this year.
She suggested that he use a diposable item with a sticky strip that only ladies usually need, as a shin pad, worked a treat!!!

bedfordblue, I once met a guy in a chalet who used the same thing. I was loath to suggest it on this forum though as the very mention of the words "panty liners" usually make make the male of the species hold their heads in their hands and go "Eeeeaaauugh"

rockyrobin, When getting your liners foamed it's quite difficult to wiggle each foot the same amount! At first mine were fine in the left and painful in the right - that then swopped around, and now they're good in both, however I do have to wiggle my foot around quite a lot when I first put my boots on the get the foot in exactly the right spot. Stick with it when your blisters have gone.
spyderjon, I had a pair of XWave 9s and they killed me - nothing to do with the flex though - that was fine! I'm 5'5 and a little under 9st - it's only habit!

easiski, I just tried my foam liners on to remind what they are like:-
The left hand one is real snug round the forefoot but the heel hold is lacking.
The right hand one is also real snug round the forefoot but feels like it is throttling my foot even on lowest buckle setting. There is a nasty pressure point running from below right ankle bone protrusion diagonally across the top of my right foot.
It feels between the two as if one has not got enough foam in (left) and the other has been over foamed (right).
As they are now I cannot see me wearing them ever again. I expected some discomfort but the difference between the two boots is like night and day. It really shows up when you try to put the liners in the shells. The left one is a doddle, the right one is a struggle

Hi rockyrobin. Sliding's going nowhere as I haven't done any since the Warren thing. I'm obviously not dedicated . Sorry, I don't remember anyone from the day. By the end, I was too screwed up about not being able to do anything! I was already working on getting rid of the A frame from last year. But turning it into an O frame, with my knock knees, was impossible . My pole plants were "fairy" and when I put a great effort in I lost balance completely and fell over As for the thigh steering, forget it! I don't have sartorious muscles. Or any other sort. I can hardly lift my leg with a ski boot and ski on the end, let alone wave it around 100 times!
Have you read DG Orf thread about wanting a woman but telling of about a million excuses as to why he can't do anything to get one? Well, I want to be a better skier but:
Lessons are expensive.
I'd have to spend time practising what I learnt.
I have too much fun skiing with my friends to want to miss out - and none of them want lessons.
My other half doesn't either.
If I was a better skier, I'd have to join the "good group" and they're boring old farts who don't have bar stops and lunch. (They sit on a rock and eat stuff they've nicked from the breakfast table.)
I'd have to join a gym and grow muscles.
I'd have to go on an intensive ski camp holiday on my own. And I'm too scared to do that in case I was the worst or I'd get injured and no-one would care.
I'd have to buy some more ski boots - and go through all that entails yet again. (Now on my third pair. They're too loose for any real control but at least they're reasonably comfortable and I can flex them. Feel very sorry for you and your boot troubles.)
Anyway, that's it ! Sometimes, girls just wanna have fun
