Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hello again! Trying to plan my holiday!

Hi Very Happy

I'm sure no one remembers me but I joined the forum before my first ever skiing holiday in January and asked a lot of questions, was probably very annoying but was very pleased with the amount of useful advise I received off this forum!

My first season went well despite a few set backs!! My first holiday was booked with a friend to go to Morzine for a week in January. Things didn't start well when at 6.30 the night before we were due to fly my friend dropped out but I decided to go alone and had a fantastic time. Luckily the chalet was very quiet and the owner took me under her wings and went skiing with me the whole week! Had a brilliant time and came back confident on blues and having done a handful of reds which started with me standing at the top going "oh poo-poo" and being very pleased when I got to the bottom in one piece haha!

Got home from this holiday and was well and truly bitten by the skiing bug so booked and had another brilliant week of skiing with a different friend in Val Thorens in March. On this holiday I did plenty of reds and felt pretty confident on them but not stupid enough to try reds!!

So now it's time to start planning my holidays for this season! Unfortunately I can only go on one skiing holiday this year as I have been roped into going on a snow boarding holiday in February. As I'm quite likely to brake something snow boarding I want to book my skiing holiday for January (also that way money allowing I may be able to fit a sneaky trip in in march as well!).

The problem I have now is who do I go on holiday with!! I have a couple of beginner friends but I don't want to spend the week on blues. I loved my time in Val Thorens as we could literally set off for the whole day and not had to do the same run twice ect. The best day of this holiday was the day the Inghams rep took us out for the day because we got the ski so much and not have to worry about where I was going! So this has made me think about going on a guided holiday? Anyone got any experience of this?

I really don't think I will be able to find any of my friends to go with (or any that won't let me down!). I just know from previous holidays that I don't enjoy skiing alone and like to be with someone a bit more decisive than me who can point us in the right direction so I can enjoy skiing instead of worrying about my non existant map reading skills haha

Sorry for the above ramble! So any suggestions or ideas on planning my skiing holiday? Howe good are guided skiing holidays? do they literally ski with you everyday? Normally big mixed groups? My other option would maybe to be hooking up with another group who have a spare space? But I wouldn't just want a spare bed in a chalet, would want someone to ski with as well and not to feel like I'm holding them up if they are better than me so maybe not a realistic option?

Ideas please? Thankies in advance Smile

Millie10, why not join one of the snowheads bashes? The birthday bash in Italy would be a fantastic way to get some great skiing and socialising. Or just keep your eye on the "trips" forum, my best mate was unable to join me on this year's trip due to a scheduling clash, he found a trip being organised on the forum and had a great time

best of luck

Millie10, Simon Butler Skiing might suit. They run packages in their own chalet-based hotels in Megève, based around 2 hours group instruction per day. You'll be in a group of people of similar ability, with plenty of opportunity to socialise in the bar, dining room, etc in the evenings. Guiding sessions and private tuition are available as additions too, but you'll learn the lie of the land in the lessons anyway, and may well find others to ski with who'll be more than happy to do any map reading that may be required.

Hells Bells... I would love to not snowboard but I have little choice! My brothers are insistent on a family tyre trip (me, 2 brothers and our partners) and they are hell bent on going to a small resort in Bulgaria. Both my brothers have been on one snowboarding holiday but both are still very much beginners and just want the cheapest holiday with cheap beer! They have said I can go and ski but I know I will be really bored are there are only a handful of pistes! So instead I'm going to go snowboarding which I have had a few lessons of and am very bad at doing!

Hi Pam W, impressed you remember me lol, thanks! I definately remember your name as you were always kind enough to take time to answer all my daft questions!

nbt, My worry about joining a snow heads bash is that I'm a beginner compared to people on here!!! I'm very sensible about my limitations and although I will go down a red I do it in a steady controlled manner and don't think I will be ready to progress off reds this season! What I don't want to do is be a burden to a group and to hold them up! I by no means need my hand holding but I like to be in control and not wizzing down as fast as possible!

Laundyman, 2 hours tuition sounds expensive lol! Because I would then still need to pay for guiding for the rest of the day!

Millie10, there's usually a couple of 'beginners' on most SnowHeads trips. And you won't need to pay for 'guiding' after the lesson because there will be lots of others to ski with.

Millie10, I also remember you!

If you can do the odd easy red in a controlled manner you are ready for a SH's bash - I did the EoSB in VT as my first bash and I hadn't even ridden confidently on a chairlift with skis on before, let alone skied down a blue and any green longer than about 100 yards in a controlled snowplough Shocked Check out the threads linked to above - I think you sound ideal for a SH's bash IMO.

Millie10, There are lots of 'improving' skiers on sH bashes and the lessons are cheap whilst also being of high quality. There are loads of people, who know the resort, to ski with before or after your lessons. Not everyone's an expert and all have different skiing needs throughout the day, so you'll always find a group to accommodate your skiing needs. I did my first bash this year EoSB and was blown away by the people and skiing options available. However, be warned, they are addictive, they will drain your holiday entitlement and your bank account and they might force you to adopt new name Very Happy

Millie10, I advise against March in Serre Chevalier, unless you are planning a baptism of fire. Although there will be people around to ski on piste with, the holiday is an 'Off-piste bash'. I think the Birthday bash sounds a possibility for you though.

Hells Bells, Fair point. Although I thought a certain person/s was intending to do a gentle tour and asessment of the local hot chocolate/toddy purveyors. I also thought I might just be joining her if my gnarl failed to materialise. I' sure that not everyone will be shredding to the max

As Hells Bells, says, nearer the time there'll be loads of people coordinating their travel arrangements. There's even a thread devoted to it, this one's for the Sella Ronda/Arraba trip http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/travellist.php?eventname=S8BB which as you can see, some people have already started to book flights for. Follow the main thread http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=77487 and you'll get advice and updates as time progresses.

Millie10, As others have said, the Birthday Bash would be a great one for you. It's a really, really good one (not that I'm biased or anything wink ) and you will have plenty of people to ski with. I'm super gnarly and can do the Sella Ronda bothways round (twice) and that's just in the morning.... but if you would like some company, I'll make a super human effort to slow down and ski with you... wink What's your opinion of a bombardino? Toofy Grin

Seriously though, the event may look large, but that just means there's an even greater variety of people skiing at your level (and worse!). You will never find a friendlier bunch of people in one place than on a sH's bash. We've had many nervous bash virgins (and I was one myself not so long ago) but I can't think of a single one who went home and saying to themselves that they'd never do that again. Very Happy As Si says, it's more likely to be the opposite - you'll end up addicted to it. Beware! snowHead

Hey Millie, Glad to see you come back to here to ask further questions. I was many years ago a Ski Guide in La Plagne for a long gone company called Simply Ski. The first morning was always taken up with a quick assesment of all skiers looking for guiding. We would then split the group into two or if possible three groups depending on ability and then spending the rest of week doing escorted skiing. Was always great fun and something enjoyed by guides and guests alike.

There are operators out there that still provide this service such as Le Ski who run excellent chalets across major French resorts.

Good luck with your search for the right combination.

Millie10, Hi another option, we came across a group of single skiers when staying with Mark Warner, a few of them where truly single, but others came on the holidays as they partner didn't ski, the adavange was no single room supplement and they got to take advantage of the ski hosting, there where a number of different level groups. The company they booked through was www.friendshiptravel.com

Yes & yes. A good sales person lets their customer know that there are other options out there and highlights the benefits and the downfalls. However, I can't think of a single company that offers the same level of inclusion and variety of options that a snowHead bash does. From my single experience I can say that I never felt like a number on a sales sheet and that I always felt like I was a part of the whole. snowHead bashes are personal, they're not something that a TO can deliver regardless of how much you pay. And then there's the price....... who can match the prices whilst maintaining the same standard of service ? Close the sale Phil, draw them into the family, dont send 'em away.

Awards....... fair point, just could'nt resist whilst seeing you online wink
