Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

hang11,

All terrain tyres are not the same as all season tyres. The former has harder compound to tackle rock and stubby and deep blocks to tackle mud and sand. The M&S of the latter stands for "mud" and "snow" and are road going smaller blocks for digging into mainly the snow.

According to Pirelli web site their winter tyre is rated 5* for snow use. Their all season tyres (STR) give 3* on snow and 4* for paved road. On all terrain tyres (ATR) paved has gets 3* for paved surface but 4* for gravel.

Samerberg Sue,

Winter tyres are manufactured from soft compound. The continuous rings, which are good for high speed, are chopped up in blocks for digging into snow at the expense of higher travelling noise. Alos the soft rubber will deflect more when corner at high speed. Thus it is technically very challenging to produce winter tyres to suit high performance cars although in reality sensible people do not drive at the car's ultimate speed on snow ground.

The point here is if a car were to fitted tyres inferior to the stock tyres that could have implication to the insurance claims in the event of an accident. Many European cars are electronically limited to 155mph so Z rated tyres are quite common but I doubt if winter tyres are widely available at such speed rating.

hang11, Snow Tyres are not the same as Winter Tyres either.

Vredestien have confirmed that there is very little detrimental effect to running Winter Tyres all year around, only a slight drop off in Summer performance, increased wear rate and noise. Far less of a disadvantage compared to running Summer tyres in the Winter.
