Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

rossignol open 500 skis

Poster: A snowHead
my boyfriend is a snowboarder and has turned to the light and wants to try his hand at skiing. He has seen a pair of rossignol open 500s going for a decent price and wondered if anyone has a pair/has owned a pair and whether they'd recommend them or not. He is a beginner but obviously wants a pair of skis that he can 'grow into', ideally a good all-round ski. If not, any other recommendations of good skis, a few years old? He's seen some salomon x-screams going too which I'd be more inclined towards. I need your thoughts snowheads! snowHead

surfing monkey, x screams are quite ancient now but if he is a beginner, hire don't buy, he will improve very quickly. Boots should be the first thing you buy not skis, but wait until he has done a couple of weeks, as what will be suitable at the start will be quite different to what is suitable after 2 weeks. He may not like it and want to just snowboard!

believe me i have tried to tell him this but sadly he likes the idea of having his own equipment! and it is actually cheaper to buy some second hand stuff off ebay than it is to hire for a week in most resorts. I just want to make sure he doesn't get a ski that's too advanced and he'll struggle to learn on. I've persuaded him that he should go for slightly shorter skis so turning is easier (he's been reading stuff online about what length he needs for his height but this isn't aimed at beginners) he's pretty set on these rossignols so i just wanted to check he won't struggle too much with them.

surfing monkey, I had some 500's a few years back and liked them at the time. They will be fine for him, but I got rid of them because they were too soft. If he wants to keep improving he will have to get somthing a bit stiffer eventually.
