Poster: A snowHead

I am thinking of going to the Schladming night race next winter (24/1/12), can anybody offer useful advice on getting there, accommodation, good viewing points, etc? I am a keen skier and follower (on Eurosport) of the ski racing season. Thanks.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

If you have not booked accommodation yet then you may find it difficult to get reasonable rates in Schladming for that week.
There is a snowHead here called Flangesax who runs a small B&B in Radstadt and I know they go to the race night each year. Sometimes we get tickets, last year we didn't it was sold out in next to no time. There is a group of us who go to the town and watch on the big screens set up in the pedestrian area. The atmosphere is mega and it is a great night out. Taxi from Radstadt to Schladming and back cost us 50 euro for 4 of us I think last year.
This is Flangesax's web site: http://www.austrian-adventures.com/

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

davidthornton, went three years in a row - and it was always special. Get tickets ASAP - and get them for the blue zone (around the bottom of the slope). A wee bit more expensive, but certainly beats the red tickets which are on the (steep, icy) side of the slope. In the red zone, unless you get right to the front (or are very tall) you may not see very much. Don't miss the Monday night bib ceremony - when the draw for run order is made. Good to see the skiers close up - and (in my view) a much better street party than on race night (when it gets very busy - not surprising with 50,000 people in the village).

davidthornton, You can get red tickets on the night, these as Ayrshire Andy, says are a climb up the hill but I've done that and it's worth it to see the spectacle. The blue tickets and above go in no time and probably all to locals, tickets not available until 1 Aug, http://www.thenightrace.at/tickets/ticketinfo-2012.html
The photo below I took a few mins ago from the apartment i'm in til winter.Very good view of night race, shame we can't rent it during the winter, it's already booked for race night week. The bottom of the race piste is a huge 40 foot hole at the moment, they are building a underground car park along with several other very noisy building projects for wm 2013.
Schladming is also hosting the world cup final next march and as hinted at in the photo the world champs in 2013
for accommodation try
friends of mine will have new apartments built ready for next winter up in Ramsau (5km from Schladming)

Thanks for the very useful info, Samerburg Sue, Ayshire Andy, Waynos. I have now been in touch with Ben at austrian-adventures.com and he has been able to make a good offer on accommodation. That just leaves me to sort out accommodation in Kitzbuhel for the Hahnenkamm weekend, not proving easy. Can anybody recommend somewhere/someone in Kitzbuhel, close to the centre? I have tried the tourist office but the hotels/b&bs want a 7/14 night booking.

davidthornton, re Kitz, try www.booking.com and just enter Kitzbuhel and your exact dates - there are places available over the race week-end. Pension Gasteiger just outside at Schwarzsee is showing a couple of rooms left and there are other places in other towns nearby.

Bode Swiller thanks. I have now managed to find a pension in the town.
