Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche transceiver practice

Poster: A snowHead
I'm now the owner of a new avalanche transceiver and would like to try it out and get some practice in it's use.

Trouble is I only bought one and you can't do much with only one (except wear it around the house and I've already tried that !).

Does anybody know of any courses, groups or clubs that run practice sessions ?

All you really need is one other person who has one in your area, hopefully you will get a better response to your request now you've posted on here snowHead

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

After seeing the Avalanche Alert programme recently you now need to get a shovel, extending probe and that new fangled avalung thingy, and dont forget to keep the end near you mouth just in case.

Seriously though you are right. I hired one earlier this year, but without someone else with one you cant really practice the technique on you own, but then would you go to places where you might get caught out on your own? But what the instructions won't tel you is how to keep your head and concentrate when all hell has broken loose around you though. I think the SCGB do mountaincraft courses which cover this (but you may have to be a member).

Colin Vince, I bought the transceiver as package that included a shovel and probe, but not an avalung thingy - I am a sceptical about how useful these really are.

I did find a course advertised on the Facewest site http://www.facewest.co.uk/training.htm that sounds quite good. Too late for this year but maybe they run the course every year (anybody heard if it is any good ?). Also as they take place in Wales it's a bit of a treck from Northumberland.

Where do they find the snow AB? I suppose we could do it on sand dunes here in South Wales? If there is a demand for this I could set up no-snow courses - I'm looking for a new job!
