Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Claviere Trip - Skiing Info required for advanced skiers

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Due to our daughter doing a season there we are off to Claviere for a week in 2011-2012 at some point. Having been on a day trip to the area a few years ago my abiding memories are of mainly motorway pistes . What is there in the way of challenenging pistes in the area. Anywhere I can find out about the off piste ?

All recommendations / information welcome !

Can't really comment as not an expert skier or off piste type, but last year when sat on my apt balcony at Montgenevre i watched a couple of guys come off piste down the Rocher de l'Aigle and L aigle, which lies between Claviere and Montgenevre, your lift pass covers both resorts, and if you felt engetic you could use your full day Milky way pass to get to Sauze Doulx or Siestre, or book a coach trip to Sierre Chevailir also covered on a weeks lift pass.

lots of scope for lift served off piste in the area and one or two challenging black runs.

As cockerhoop mentions, Rocher de L'Aigle is a very good off piste area and has lots of options, including some very steep descents through trees and rock bands. Skied theses a few years ago and we loved it. It's as challenging as you want to make it and with a few extra boot packs there's even more stuff in that sector.

You'll see a fair few of these when you take the Rocher de L'Aigle lift up to the top. From the top of that lift you also have some very good options over into the Claviere side of things. The Coletto Verde (sp?) can be very challenging dependent on conditions and there's some great options (again, especially after a boot pack) in that big massive bowl that makes up the Col Saurel bowl. Some stunning descents down from Grand Charvia.

Here's a pic of that area that i've posted on here before.

I've not skied much on the north side of the resorts, but from what i hear there is some brilliant skiing there. We're all set to head to Claviere next season again

Lots of previous threads about the area, if you type Claviere in to the search function

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/search.php?mode=results

and, not sure if you'll be able to read the text on this, but this is a map that I have sent to a fair few snowheads over the last few years. I have a pdf available if you want it.

Very Happy

Very nice tree skiing on the lower slopes in Claviere itself, loads of good offpiste higher up between Claviere and Montgenevre but make sure you know what you're doing, some faces are said to avalanche regularly. (We did one of those and the locals said they were seeing us from far below in a Montgenevre bar, wondering if we'll start an avy. However, we were with our very good guide, whom I tend to trust more, and picked a conservative route with proper protocol...).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Just to add to what horizon has said...

There are also a fair few cliff bands in the L'Aigle sector, so make sure you know where you're going in that respect as well.

All great stuff thanks. Shoogly, a pdf would be excellent if you can. Also any infomation on guides would be welcome as I'd be concerned about skiing off-piste in an area I know nothing about especially given what Shoogly and Horizon have added.

and if you want some Millionaires skiing go up the new Serre Tibaud lift and rather than go back to Montgenevre from top of roche rouge lift, go the back way to Claviere, we didn't use the blacks just the blue run, but we skied 3 miles and only saw 2 other people, and that was easter week
i have pic on teh photos area from our Hameau apt showing Pain del sol area towards Claviere we skied the easy red back and crossed the steep black.
if you wanted to explore Montgenevre slopes just go up Col Boeuf lift and down the 99a run and your there at the serre tibaud and Tremplin lifts

agree with the others, just want to point out the lift back from montgenevre is depressingly slow.

papa haven't done the Roche D'Angle lift so can't comment on that
but the only slow one i noticed was the Montiqitaine lift coming from Claviere back to Montgenevre, this was a 60s 2 seater

i used to work in Montgenevre - 10 years ago now, but the off-piste skiing was amazing. I learnt to board there also. The link to Claviere at the time was a bit tricky for me and the trek over to Milky Way was arduous but I hear that since the Winter Olympics in the MW, there is a new 5 man fast chair that can get you up into Sestriere quite quickly so from Monty, through to Claviere - Cesana - Sansicario - Sestriere then home is actually doable in a day for more experienced skiiers. Miss Monty loads - ah the good ol days, memories flooding back of the sun trap terraces with a demi-peche (beer with peach syrop!). I have been back a few times since my ski season days and the same old faces are still there - its makes all the difference when the locals are so friendly and welcoming.
