Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

USA's highest ski lift starts construction [updated]

[This thread heading revised 2 August, following the go-ahead of construction]

The 'Peak 8 Summit' chairlift at Breckenridge, which would be the highest in North America, has been approved for construction by the local National Forest authority. There has been a lengthy enquiry process, prompted by environmental objections from two federal agencies and 'Colorado Wild', a ski industry and Forest Service monitoring group.

Construction of the lift may now commence within days - with the lift starting service this winter - unless Colorado Wild decide to take legal action.

Reports from Casper Star Tribune and Summit Daily News.

It had to happen. Currently it's a long hike to get to the area, which keeps the crowds down. I suppose next up will be a bit of remodelling on the hill to "improve" accessibility for all levels of users.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It's not going to spoil the appearance of the mountains too much, as they are already pretty well criss crossed woith pistes and lifts/lift lines anyway, but it won't help, especially as it is presumably all or mostly above the tree line. It'll certainly take more skiers up to that area than can be bothered to hike up there (I couldn't, but I might well have taken a lift). I suppoe that the owners want to sell more or more expensive tickets.

I thought that the skiing at Breckenridge was terrific, although it's a bit high and all the slopes face pretty much the same way.

It will now be a 5-10 minute hike instead of a 30-45 minute hike to the Lake Chutes, which contain some steep, exciting but fairly short pitches. It's unusual for Colorado in that it is above the tree line. You can see some of that terrain in this photo:

There are strong feelings in the US (both ways) about putting lifts into formerly "hike to" areas, as evidenced on this Epic Ski thread:

I would favour the 45 min hike approach and by the look of those pics it would be worth it...!!!

But at least they appear to have kept some terrain back

I still tend to lose my nerve a bit when it starts to get really steep.

Kramer,

I think that is all about knowing you can do it. I get more nervous watching other people and some scare the crap out of me...!!
And on those steeps you really don't want to fall as at the very least you will go a long way and take a v long time getting your kit back.

You just need to know that your turn will do it...!!

It's a mind game. Don't look down from the top, commit to the slope, and ski aggressively.

Correction; looking at those 'photos, I no longer think that the new lift will tempt me to those slopes.

I think it depends on whether it's in view of the chairlift. I don't mind trying and failing as long as it isn't under the chairlift !

Having desperately sucked for oxygen up there after 'aggression', I can add that a little smoothness goes a long way.

Updating this story, construction of America's highest ski lift has commenced. Breckenridge's $4 million Peak 8 chairlift will now be completed for this winter.
