[The heading of this thread has been updated to reflect the official IOC confirmation. Check from 29 July postings for latest info and link to official IOC statement]
Formal bids from cities that wish to stage the 2014 Winter Olympics must be submitted to the IOC by this Thursday 28 July. At the time of posting, three cities are understood to be in the running:
Sofia, Bulgaria, which has lost two previous bids to Albertville (France) in 1992 and Lillehammer (Norway) in 1994.
Salzburg, Austria, which has never bid (Innsbruck has staged the Olympics twice - in 1964 and 1976) [NB please see correction below, via the ice perv]
Pyeongchang, South Korea, which - in common with Salzburg - bid for the 2010 Olympics (which will be based in Vancouver, with skiing in Whistler)
Bids are also possible from three former members of the USSR: Almaty (Khazakhstan), Sochi (Russia) and Bakuriani (Georgia), though these countries have little record in staging downhill ski competitions. The Spanish city of Jaca (close to the Pyrenees) may also bid.
Switzerland seems to have abandoned any ambition to stage the Games for the moment (they were held at St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948), though Zurich has been mentioned. There has also been talk of a possible French bid - Chamonix was the venue in 1924, Grenoble in 1968 and Albertville in 1992 - but the recent defeat of Paris for the summer Games in 2012 has deflated French morale. Tromso, in (Arctic) Norway has been another possible contender, and has a 2014 promotional website, so maybe we'll get a late bid from there.
The winning candidate for the 2014 Games will be chosen by the IOC in 2007.
Which city would you put your money on?

David Goldsmith,
Salzburg... although being from a dominant Alpine nation this may count against..
If I could recall where the 2006 games are being held... Googled it -- Turin. so my next guess is South Korea
on the basis that they would rotate continents...and it is not Europe's turn....!!

Holding the Men's Olympic Dh on the Hahnenkamm (which was part of Salzburg's last bid) would be fascinating, and a case of life imitating art. In the film Downhill Racer, the footage that was supposed to be the Olympics was actually shot on the Hahnenkamm, which was obvious to anyone who has watched that race.
I agree, probably a race between Salzburg and Pyongyang.
Tromso sounds fascinating - relatively global-warming-proof, and not too bad for daylight if they move the Games to two weeks later as suggested. But it may be one Olympiad too soon for Norway again after 1994. (Although the US managed to win summer games bids in 1984 and 1996, only 12 years apart.) Perhaps they reckon if they bid this time they'll get 2018 - that's how you have to plan it these days.

Interesting points, Martin. It certainly would be a coup for Austria to stage the downhill on the Hahnenkamm.
The IOC don't seem to report officially on the bids as they're received - at least on their website - so it's hard to be certain who's formally lodged bids (one website is reporting 5 bids up to today). Obviously we'll have definitive info. on Thursday.
Then it'll be interesting to see if we can obtain odds ... for those interested!
Looking at the history of the Winter Olympics, it's obvious that Western Europe has dominated the hosting of the event since it started in 1924. Given the rising sun of the Asian economy (with China an obvious contender in future) I would agree that the South Korean bid looks strong - one gets the impression that the country is very ambitious and determined to stage the event.

David Goldsmith, I'm confused! You say:

Salzburg, Austria, which has never bid
|
then say:
Quote: |
Pyeongchang, South Korea, which - in common with Salzburg - bid for....
|
Has Salzburg bid before or not??

A South Korea win would definitely help to develop the industry over there (and help them to get the all important catch-up/one-up-manship over Japan) but it does need developing MASSIVELY. I skiied near Pyeongchang briefly last year 'cos my brother lives in Seoul. We had a great time and the snow/weather conditions were excellent (they do tend to have big dumps of snow followed by ice cold clear blue skies for reliably prolonged periods over there which would be ideal) but finding a European comparison I'd have to go for Scotland rather than the bigger, and better organised, European resorts.
Maybe this works in their favour though- the SK's are pretty good at the big projects and their sense of national pride means that they would put on a brilliant show- as they did with the Football.

the ice perv, thanks, you're right. I should have written: "which has never hosted the event".
Cheers.

Bexen, Salzburg was one of the losing finalists (to Vancouver) for 2010. See article here...
More about the French hesitancy there too - there's more to that the meets the eye, perhaps it not just a question of sulking at the failure of the Paris bid.
Annecy aside, seven towns have announced their wish to host the Games, subect to ratification of their bids by their national Olympic committees.

Harbin (China) and Jaca (Spain) were in the early running for 2010 as well with official bids, and look set to try again for 2014.

I wonder if there's anything to be gained by making a very late bid, which is what we're speculating about. On the surface it would seem a sign of weakness.

The bid from Russia (Sochi) is now confirmed. This report from MosNews.

Sochi is a popular Russian sea and ski resort. Russia’s sportive leader, Vladimir Putin, a devout skier and outdoorsman, is known to frequent local ski slopes in the area. |

Russian news agency Novosti reports that the "former Kazakh capital of Alma-Ata" [without checking I take it this is the city I referred to as Almaty in the first posting on this thread] has submitted its bid to the IOC:
Quote: |
The idea that the city of one million host the Winter Olympics first surfaced in the 1970s. According to the National Olympic Committee, the city has all the necessary sports facilities, including the Medeu skating rink, which was called the "factory of records" in Soviet times, the Chimbulakh mountain ski slopes, the Sholak sports palace, and many other facilities. |

Today is deadline day for candidate cities for the 2014 Games to submit bids.
SkiPressWorld is now reporting (unofficially) that 8 cities have submitted bids. At the time of posting (pretty late in the day - maybe the IOC receive bids until midnight) they believe the tally is as follows:
Borjomi / Bakuriam (Georgia)
Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan)
PyeongChang (South Korea)
Salzburg (Austria)
Sochi (Russia)
Sofia (Bulgaria)
Jaca (Spain)
Osterburg (Sweden)
Here is the SkiPressWorld report.

Mmm - I wonder where SkiPressWorld got that info. I've seen nothing about a German or Swedish bid elsewhere. Martin, I think you can leave a message on the SPW site, if you wish.
------------
Have just checked the IOC acceptance procedure for candidate cities and (unless I've missed something) the deadline is specified only as "28 July", so I guess they keep the office in Lausanne open until midnight tonight!

No midnight news from the IOC in Lausanne - very unSwiss! - it's now 1am Lausanne time, 29 June.
Meanwhile, GamesBids.com reports (again, unofficially) bids from seven of the cities listed by SkiPressWorld, omitting any Swedish/German candidate. Here's the GamesBids story.
No doubt the definitive list will be confirmed in the next few hours by the IOC.

The IOC have now released the official list of candidate cities for the 2014 Winter Olympics. There are seven, in alphabetical order, as follows (IOC spelling will now rule!):
Almaty (Kazakhstan)
Borjomi (Georgia)
Jaca (Spain)
PyeongChang (Republic of Korea)
Salzburg (Austria)
Sochi (Russia)
Sofia (Bulgaria)
Here's the IOC press release.

Well, on the strength of Austria's credentials that might seem obvious but a quick check on the IOC's selection of central European venues since 1924 makes an Asian or East European choice more likely, I would have thought.
With Turin hosting the Games in 2006, and Vancouver in 2010, the IOC might have to make a politically correct choice.

If you want to know what happens from here on - in terms of how and when the cities further their campaigns for election - here's an explanation from SkiRacing.com
The IOC's election of the host city for the 2014 Games will take place in Guatemala City in July 2007.

GamesBids.com carries a full list of all cities which 'withdrew' bids for hosting the 2014 Games. In essence these appear to have been planned bids that never materialised:
Andorra la Vella, Andorra
Grenoble, France
Harbin, China
Innsbruck, Austria
Munich, Germany
Östersund and Åre, Sweden
Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina
Tromso, Norway
Turkey
Zurich, Switzerland
The GamesBids.com report also gives early indications of which cities may bid for the 2018 Games.
