Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sunday River - Maine

Hello all.

My kids school has just announced a ski trip next year to the above resort.

Anybody got any feedback, looking at the resort, it seems low for an April holiday.

Last year they went to Winter Park, Colarado, which was fantastic but a heck of a long way to go. The school say going to the states more or less takes the under age drinking issue out of the equation, either that or the teachers just fancy it.

Last years trip was organised through a company called Pinnacle who were very poor indeed IMO. They changed the destination 3 times, from Utah to Colarado, they changed 8 weeks before departure and again 2 weeks before departure. They changed the departure airport from Edinburgh to Manchester, which considering we are from St Andrews was a bit of a hike. Also 8 weeks before departure they changed the departure day from Saturday to Monday and Tuesday (the group was split). Probably half the families had arranged either ski holidays themselves, or holidays to Tenerife etc, meaning you had to find someone to look after your child for 2-3 days. Then one of the highlights of the trip was taking in a top flight baseball game in Denver for which we paid extra. The kids were all dressed and ready to go - and the Pinnacle bus didn't turn up.
If your child is going on a Pinnacle led trip - beware!

there was someone on here asking about Sunday River earlier in the season, going in April. Think the general opinion was that it was too low for that time of year and a big risk.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There has been a thread on it - nice mountain biking but I wouldn't go transatlantic skiing there in April (or any month come to think of it when I could get far better snow further west). You can see moose however.

I skiied there a few years back and would not return. The skiing is quite limited with no challenging runs. Hills rather than mountains.

No nightlife. It's basically a couple of hotels at the base of the mountain. The nearest village is Bethel about 5 miles away.
