Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

stanton, you have of course bypassed the most pressing diary date of 2012. When the Linedance Landeck crew attempt to regain their world record cruelly stolen last year...

Watched a bit of that today while my son did da park. Good effort. No idea who was winning, but it looked like hard work!
Conditions were a bit challenging today... they are forecasting shite weather until tuesday and then bluebird powder for the last five days of the season. Get out here folks if you can.

Stuben and Zurs still had excellent skiing Saturday despite the mist and cloud cover. The front face of Stuben in particular was lovely and still not tracked out. Not exactly fluffy pow, but certainly great fun to ski. Trittkopf still fairly cold and fresh.

Thursday prolly best ski day. Friday was Strolz Sale Day (albeit a day late!)

Left St Anton this afternoon, looked the gloomiest day of the week.

We saw a huge ski map from many years ago in the window of Stuben supermarket/shop, that showed a route from Zurs back to Stuben, just wondering if anyone had a copy of that map online anywhere?

I have a map from 1958 and can't see anything like that marked. I suppose you would need to cut high and hike from the Zürsertäli and then pick your way down the steep and rather rocky (and avalanche prone) face down to Stuben?

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
Aha! Here is a description of a route from 1958.

"The Zurs-Stuben Ski Link. The best way to make this a run of interest is to start either from the top of the Hexenboden or the Zursersee lifts above Zurs. Either the Tobelmader Run or the Guggis Run will lead you to the top of the Flexen Pass. From here you have to take skis off and walk down through three or four tunnels of the Flexen Pass Road to the long, open avalanche gallery. Close here there is a way over the edge of the road that goes down a long gully, steep at first, but gentle later- which leads you down to the nursery slopes to the north of Stuben village... This run is very seldom done, as it is more convenient to travel down by bus." [The Ski Runs of Austria, Peter Riddell]

Can't say I'd fancy walking through the tunnels on foot. I can however visualise the gully he means. But would tend to agree with the final sentence!

nozawaonsen, Thanks but the map in the windows of THE shop in Stuben doesn't seem to have a walk thru the tunnels. I wil have to try and take a picture next season unless someone else passes it anytime soon!!!

kitenski, I wonder whether you may have seen a walking map? There is a walking trail that is marked on the Kompass map which sounds like the one referred to by Riddell running down through the gully beside the Flexen Pass.

You can see it if you zoom in on the Flexen Pass here.

Here's an account of Sidney Reilly of a run down through the Pass and into Stuben.

http://stantonviews.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/at-last.html

"In Zurs we made our way down some bumpy off piste to arrive at the Trittkopfbahn, we took that up and started part two of our little tour - skiing over the Flexen pass and down into Stuben. This route has more traversing than skiing and some of the traversing we had to do was very interesting indeed, drops, rocks and holes!! As we reached the road tunnel the snow was very tricky and there were a few fallers there but once over the tunnel and across a little bridge there was a lovely little run down into Stuben."

This map shows what I think is a road down to Stuben (in the distance), but you can see how you could work your way down from Trittkopf to the Flexen Pass then over as in the account above. I suspect you could manage something similar heading down from Muggengrat traversing hard right?

nozawaonsen, actually it maybe the run on that map you linked on ski.com from the top of Muggengratbahn, but it went more directly to Stuben, not via Langen

kitenski, well if it doesn't come down through the Flexen Pass gully then it looks from the Bergfex map showing the contours like it would be very steep. Look forward to seeing the map next season...

kitenski, Same as previous years I reckon, seems a shame though when theres all that great snow still there, I'd certainly be up for a long weekend end of the month if the lifts were open, guess I need some ski touring gear! I was talking to a pal at the weekend who has a place in a small Swiss ski area and the locals there have pulled together and are keeping a few lifts open for 2-3 weeks more, but I guess with an area the size of Arlberg its logistically impractical, people will have mde other arrangements/ lift maintenance etc.
