Anybody out there that can allay my fears about the conditions in Val? Somebody today mentioned grass/lake at botton of La Daille...Are they being seriopus? Thsi is our first itme to Val and we will get there on 17 April.
If there is no snow, how high up will we have to go to find snow and how easy is it to get there? Sorry never been there before. Also is it better to get acorss to Tignes?

Last Saturday afternoon (a scorcher) the snow anywhere above Solaise was wonderful, the glacier superb (if anything it could have done with being a bit softer).
Down into the bottom definitely soft, bare patches etc. But there are 300km in Espace Killy. I'd guess 5% were shut last week. Even if 50% is unskiable that leaves you with only 150km...

tinabf, Have a look at Val d'Isere live webcams You can zoom in by pressing the 'north' button on the diamond shaped control.
It looks pretty poor below Solaise, with Santons and Le Face patchy white ribbons over the rock. The glaciers above Solaise, Fornet and Grande Motte will still be excellent but you will likely be getting the lifts back to Val at the end of the day.
Friends in Tignes are saying that it is becoming dire, but they are a bit more hardcore than the average holiday maker.
If booked, go and make the most of it. If not yet booked, put the money towards a longer trip next year.

BS - just back today from a week there. Face is fine, Red M down to bottom is fine from Solaise too. Santons is open as far as Clochetons restaurant with a short walk or bus back to Front de Neige. 4 runs open all way down to La Daille too. Up high the pistes and most inbetween is very skiable. The week threw all kinds of conditions at us and we loved it all, from bullet ice, perfect snow, soft snow, rutted snow, some powdery bits right through to slush. We found ice moguls and slush moguls. It's all good to play with. Very hot first few days and much cooler midweek, and inbetween at the end. Local info says 80% pistes are still open. My little uns managed to spend a lot of afternoons just skiing on the Front de Neige on the free lifts, because even there the cover is good enough. Forget long off piste runs to valley floor though. We did the Tour de Charvet on Tuesday and had to include, super skiing on the plateau at the top, with fording the river, hiking up brown hill patches, climbing down a huge debris mess from an avalanche, and walking out the last quarter mile. We even loved doing that!
Skied most days from 9 to 5. Still the hard ice packed ruts early and the super soft moguls late in the day will break most other mortals legs !!
