Poster: A snowHead

This week, for the first time, a group of women went skiing in the tiny mountain hamlet in Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley. The women wore headscarves and long coats, but many of the local men were upset that they weren't wearing burqas too.
Nando Rollando, an Italian instructor who had been charged by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) with running the first ever skiing lessons in the area, said he had expected this kind of resistance....For full story, see: http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews/World/Story/A1Story20110403-271549.html

A burqa would be a good way to avoid the dreaded goggle tan.

If the woman is properly covered from toe to head, with a scarf, she does not need the burqa that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda want," he said. |
This is a shame as the Al-Qaeda destructive tendencies could be harnessed for a much more productive outcome if they could engage with the ski industry- the avalanche control teams could then be outsourced with a cheaper Taliban alternative, freeing up funds for cheaper ski passes or extra lifts.
Presumably they (Al-Qaeda) would endorse the use of full face helmets ILO Burkas, thus settling the helmet debate for eternity.

The quiet depressing thing about this article is the shameless sensationalism by the originating press. Hijab is not the same as burqa. A Hijab is a bit like a nun's head gear (wimple). The Burqa is like an s&m gimp curtain. Historically, burqas would have been unknown in Bamiyan. When Thesiger travelled there in the 50s they were not in evidence - Hijabs were none too common either. Also, you are unlikely to find Al Qaeda strong holds in Bamiyan. AQ are Sunni Wahabi nutters whereas the majority Hazara in Bamiyan are Shia, hence the Aga Khan, the moderate spiritual leader of the Ismaeli Shia Islam sept, supporting more enlightened practices.
The saddest part of all this is the corruption of these areas by outsiders. Aid from Saudi - sunni - or Tehran - shia - comes with a price (as does Western aid naturallly). Described as 'humanitarian charity', it is often little more than 'demanding extremism with menaces'. The menace being hunger or extreme poverty if the party line is not followed.
Sorry to turn it all serious and all but it will probably be my only time...ever.

Sports and education, the best chance of peace for the next generation. Then again, I worked with a guy who spent a year out with tribes fresh from fighting the Russians. Very hospitible people but families would keep a fued going over generations. |
