Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fritschi Freeride heel auto-releasing!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've some Fristchi Freeride+ bindings mounted on pocket rockets and my partner has some mounted on some K2 Silencers. We've both experienced the binding going into uphill mode whilst skiing downhill! Luckily not caused any wipe outs yet but hardly confidence inducing. They are only 12 months old and probably done around 8-10 weeks skiing. The releases have happened during normal skiing, not like jumps, big compressions or high speed turns. Happened last week to me, on piste, things felt a tad strange, stopped looked down and my heel was free, the heel release / lock was still in the locked position. Beyond me how it released was 100% locked down properly before as had done quite a bit of skiing that morning in lots of wet powder.

I've also had the toe of the boot slip out, so that the boot is just clipped in by the corner of the boot toe at a strange angle, I certainly notice this when it happens. I think this is down to the screw on the toe piece becoming too lose.

These are not cheap bindings, when they are not trying to eject me in various fashions they are great but quite frankly they are dangerous. When I get a chance I'll pop back in the shop where I got them for them to have a look. Any feedback appreciated, maybe something replaceable has worn out or the a screw needs a tweak somewhere or they are not fit for purpose.

That's curious 'cos the Freeride Plus has an extra anti-insta-tele feature:

Are you sure that they have been mounted correctly? If the heel piece was too far back or forwards then this could happen.

altis, Never knew that red bit was called "anti insta-tele" - there is some wear on my ones but not the wife's set.

It does sound like they might not have been mounted properly - probably worthwhile getting a professional opinion from someone else who knows how to fit this type of binding.

Is there a chance that they mixed up the binding setup between you and your wife?

I've got the earlier (grey and yellow)Diamir Freerides, and have suffered insta-tele a couple of times - I'm sure it's been clipping the heel lock with the other ski rather than the bar popping due to flex.

I'm thinking of making up some sort of deflector plate to stop this happening....Or something like this, which I saw on the web somewhere - would have to be a weak pin (this looks like P-tex) so it would break before the binding does if too great a force on it

The newer ones have a plate which should deflect the other ski from the lock lever, plus an anti-insta-tele device built into the bar.

For the "Freeride Plus"? I thought the anti-insta-tele feature was to prevent this?

Blimey bit worrying all this, I have Freeride Plus bindings (the red and black ones)!

I haven't experienced the problem above and hope I don't but I did have a couple of pre-releases the other weekend on chopped up and bumpy slopes where the heel unit released when I was putting forward pressure on it in the turn - I literally felt myself stepping out of the binding. I took it into a specialist and he cranked the din setting up (closer to my Alpine race bindings) and said the heels had about 2mm of adjustment/space between them and my boots and I got the impression that could make a difference too. What interested and kinda surprised me me was he said Diamir don't do a Din setting chart for their bindings so they just base their adjustments on Salomon charts and keep the settings a little lower for the touring bindings. After adjustment I didn't have any further problems but it made me a little tentative on them for a while I have to admit!

Anyway, my on-topic question to the experts here is are these bindings generally quite sensitive and how common are the sorts of problems highlighted by the OP above?

roga, I've been on plusses for a couple years (before going all cool and jumping to tele Cool). Plenty of days ridden fairly hard and never a problem (i'm not far off 120kg neither). I also had my din up to my previous alpine setting. For sure sounds like your mount / play at your boots could have been a problem. As others have said, one of the features of the pluses was the fix for the insta-tele issue of older models. I dont think this is at all common on these

barry, good to hear - yeah it was Mountain Spirit I took them to for adjustment so I'm absolutely sure they knew their stuff. The Din was set about 2 below where I usually have it on Alpines so that can't have helped either but the guy in there seemed to think even a couple of millimetres play could have a negative affect on release values.
