Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I can only turn right!

Please advise on an annoying quirk my legs seem to have developed. My turns right, with left-hand ski down, are coming along great. My left leg is learning really quickly and is doing a good carve and edge with angulation.
My left turns on the other hand....my right leg is a delinquent - it appears to be unlearning, or at least, not keeping up with the other turn. Basically it doesn't like finding the edge and the left leg doesn't angulate properly so the turn is not parallel. I'm really enjoying all turns right but just put up with turns left. Are there any exercises that can help me regularise my turns? Is it normal to have different abilities in different directions?!
Will I need a lobotomy?

Get the canting (leaning) adjusted inward on one or both boots.

Sofia,

It might work but the other way if you cant turn left is to keep going, if you can do 360 's in a controlled manner you will be able to get down the hill perfectly satisfactorily and be the envy of all those with a lower skill set.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Sofia, There will be a problem with your technique but what will be compounding it will be your belief that you can not turn left,
the more you think about it the worse it becomes a bit like a self fulfilling prophecy.

People do have a stronger side and usually this will become evident in your early development, but it should not be a show stopper.

Have you done any work with an instructor, that would be the best next step or as DaveC suggests a short video clip of you skiing both left and right turns would be the next best thing to let us see what is happening.

Just out of interest where in Scotland are you, anywhere close to Aberdeen?

I agree, kevindonkleywood, I have made this issue worse in my head because I can almost hear myself going 'Yay Right! poo-poo, left....! etc.' I'm in Moray, so closish to Aberdeen. Are you offering me a lobotomy, re-canting or a ski lesson. Hope it's the latter!

Will try to get a video for next week. (By that time, I will have been skiing with Roga so hopefully will either rise a skill level! Or want to retire)

Re: The canting - do I go back to the shop and explain the issue?

I hope I can just sort this with more exersises, before I adjust the boots. I was given one by a teacher who made me basically (and try not to go crazy with the image) stick my fists between my knees during the traverse and going into the turn, just to keep my turns equal. It did seem to help - maybe I should just continue skiing like this!

Sofia, I would be more than happy to spend some time with you on the plastic mat at Garthdee (Ski Aberdeen).
I would hold off on fiddling with boots etc till you have a better understanding of what your problem actually is.

Drop me a PM if your interested

Aah fair enough. If you're up for a bit of late season touring (if there's enough snow) after the easter holidays, give me a shout when you're up!
