Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stinky Ski Boots

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have a pair of Head ski boot, some 7 years old. I have come to the conculsion that they now officially smell.

I have taken the foamy boot inserts out with a view to sticking them into the washing machine but someone has suggested that this might ruin them.

Can any one suggest the best way to deal with this problem? Is there a solution that I can soak the inserts in?

Febreze has some impact on smelly inner boots but not sure you'll find anything that completely eliminates pongs, more like most things will mask the smell and minimise it. You could also try sticking them in the freezer for a few days, this I believe freezes the bacteria that causes the smells, and then apply something like Febreze to mask any remaining smelliness.

Bit late now but prevention is better than cure so always remove the inners after a day skiing and let them dry out properly - I usually remove the inner and then footbeds from the inners as well. Avoid leaving used socks in the boots for any length of time too - remove and dry out ASAP and/or wash 'em. You'll also find some types of inner tend to pong less anyway, for example I've noticed Zip Fits tend to be quite pong resistent so I guess if your inners persist in being smelly you could try getting custom inners for the boots if you don't want to replace them completely, expensive I know but if the pong is really bad and you want to hang onto the boots it might be worth considering.

I had this with a pair of boots and despite washing, cleaning and spraying they still stank.

It turned out that the problem was with the shell rather than the liner. The base of the shell (inside) had a plastic insert under which was a build up of black growth (ugg). Removing the plastic insert and cleaning this (just with soapy water) restored the boots to their unsmelly state.

Tiger2, interesting.

I've read here a while ago that microwaving the (dry) inners will help, but haven't tried it (yet). Seems to make sense, it should kill the bacteria. You might of course think twice about microwaving food in the same oven, of course...

instead of microwaving them extreme cold will do the same thing to kill bacteria - whole house will stink if you microwave them! Agree with Tiger, could well be the damp that never dries out in the bottom of the shell, often the cause. You can buy little smelly plastic balls to keep in them between wearing and that at least masks it, you can get them for trainers, can't remember what they are called (they don't smell quite as toxic as those horrible car fresher hangy thins either).
