Poster: A snowHead
|
Evening all.
Got back from Montgenevre last week and injured my knee on the last day and yes, you guessed it, the last run! Would of been good if anyone saw it, didn't land a jump well, the tip of the ski got caught and pulled me this way and that, twisting my knee - and then the bindings decided to release!
Anyway, the so called knee specialists aren't too sure what's happened, a couple think torn cartilage as I can't bend my knee and it feels like there is a force stopping me but the thing that bemuses them is that I feel no pain with this. The other options are the dreaded cruciate and medials.
They think the best option is to operate which I would like to avoid at all costs, so my questions to you:
- Has anyone had this type of injury before? If so all details would be appreciated
- Operation wise, if I need it, how easy will it be for me skiing next year (once I overcome the mental barrier)
- Any advice?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

sellwin90, if you have a torn cartilage then an operation, generally keyhole, is the only option.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Assuming you've got private health insurance push for an MRI and then you might need an arthroscopy. Probablt no rush as swelling needs to go down. If you have surgery before summer and are dilligent in rehab no reason you shouldn't be skiing December onwards. IANAD but have had enough knee injuries to be an informed layman.

Arthroscopy is what the doctor said and they would have done it the other day but I wanted to try and get an MRI before I rush into anything but at the same time I want it sorted asap so I can get back to normal life

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Take your doctor's advice and get yourself an arthroscopy. The sooner the better (there is some evidence that operating early leads to better long term outcome). An MRI may or may not be helpful.

sellwin90, what you are describing (knee won't bend, but no esp painful) is termed a "locked knee" and indicates a mechanical impediment within the joint - a bit of something has become detached and is getting in the way.
MRI will give you the diagnosis but will not treat it.
Arthroscopy will also give you the diagnosis but additionally the surgeon will be able to treat it at the same time.
