so, who's your money on kooky?
Cuche and Svindal will take a bit of beating and if he has one of his 'good days' Bode too. An outsider......Walchhofer - would be great as I think he's retiring at the end of the season (he's several hotels in Zaunchensee to run!! )

Agree, Cuche is the man at the moment. Svindal, Bode & Innerhofer will be in the mix.
An outside surprise bet could be Domonik Paris. He's just hit great form and was 2nd last week in Chamonix on a really tough icy Kandahar track. He's big and strong with no pressure on him.
Would also be good to see Patrick Jaerbyn up there as he's only 41 years young!
Bad news for team GB today. Ed Drake fell during training and has injured his ankle and will not be racing, so TJ will be the sole GB racer. He said that the course skied a lot easier today in training.
Lets just hope for a good close exciting race.

From this what I heard on team captains meeting today, Innerhofer is sick, so he skipped bib draw. No idea how serious (I didn't see his serviceman for ages, so no insider info about this ), but if he would be 100% fit, I'm sure Italian coaches wouldn't excuse him for bib draw at TCM.
I'm really bad predicting all this, but I would still go with Cuche. But things changed today, and it will get even worse tomorrow, since they are promising temperatures around 0 for all night. Today course was pleasant to ski down, including Freiefall, which I couldn't say for previous days. But it's still bumpy like hell, so it's still definitely not easy one.

kooky, my money was always on Cuche with Innhofer as a late back-up. He had good times in the training.
Looks like the flu virus is spreading as Maria Riesch is now back in bed having come 11th in the combined. She definitely did not look really on her best form in the slalom. Found it strange that Lindsey Vonn did the fast part but not the technical bit, but it is pretty obvious that she is still not recovered from her fall last week. It seems to have knock Rebensburg for six as well. If it is anything like the virus I've had she will not be ready by next week for the GS or Slalom.
Another who may take the men's DH is Bode Miller. kooky you know I'm seriously not one of his fans, but in the Super-G he was really rocketing along. Had he not lost his pole and then later his balance, I think he would have set a time that would have been hard to beat. He had past most of the nasty bits when he hooked that gate with his right hand. Although I dislike him as a person, I think he is always in the picture if he is on top form and it seems that he is judging by the Super-G result.

Samerberg Sue, wouldn´t pick Innerhofer (although I did win a round of schnapps for tipping him in the SG ) He is an ice specialist and it will be too soft for him. Would love Bode to win, you know how I feel about him, but I don´t think a win is in it for him, maybe a podium though.

Sleipnir, Just seen camera run, think it´ s good to have a low number, still going for Cuche or Kröll, but look out for the croatians, they have a good bib draw

Surprised to see Eric Guay up there in No.1 position - he is something of a dark horse! Consistent but not much on the podium lately!
Cuche about to start, Guay has already seen off Walchhofer and Svindal. why do they keep breaking the flow of the runs with these pauses - there was one just before Svindal so it can't be an advertising one this time?

Cuche second! Thought he was going to grab it..

Cuche led in the middle but lost it again at the 4th intermediate time (from being -0.11 ahead at the third to +0.24 at the 4th) , almost made it back by the 5th (only +0.09 behind) and ended +0.32 behind in second place! Top speed only(!) 106.4kmh compared to Guays 109.2kmh
Yet another scalp to Guay!

Paris and Reichelt now down and out! Interesting that Hudec of Canada who finished +4.04 behind Guay also clocked over 100km/h (104.7) and also Markic (Slovenia) who clocked 106.8 but finished +4.58 behind.
None of the others seem able to break the 100km/h barrier now. With the top 30 gone it looks like Guay has it in the bag! Well done Canada

andyph, yep only about 40-50 meters way too short for a DH , the strength in the legs has gone and the soft snow is making it very dangerous. I hope Svindal is ok, he was really shaken up

andyph, just you I think andyph the guy who just wiped out was not prepared for the slight compression and was too knackered to counter its impact!

Yes, I thought that also, but it's probably got something to do with the little 'jump' part way down the run out, which i can imagine doesn't help.

fookin Eurosport cut to an interview for TJs run, and ORF did too but you could just make him out on the monitor for about 20 secs safely through Ziel though and current 39th place

kooky, Got TJ's stats - sadly does not make good reading But he got a result so that has to be a bonus for him. Currently lying 36th from 37 finishers!
I think the soft snow has a lot to do with the crashes at the end, plus the sheer exhaustion of having survived that course! Bode gave a good interview on German TV as did Guay and Cuche. None complained one way or the other. They seem to all agree that a course for the World Championship should be harder than a World Cup one!

I'm pleased for Eric Guay - seems like a nice bloke.

Given our ability to sort of pick the winners (I wish I had 10 euros in Guay to win, that would have been long odds) perhaps we should thing about the DH for die Mädels. I know who I would like to win the ladies, but who will actually win, well that is another matter
New thread anyone?

I don't really know what was happening down there, except what I saw on photos from coworker who was in finish. But I just came back from women TCM and some coaches were complaining, about finish. Skaardal's answer was, that it's 130m long, which is 10m more then any other finish run on World cup. So obviously it's long enough, but it's bumpy... as whole track is, so it might be a bit more challenging to stop, especially when your concentration is gone crossing finish line.

primoz, some nice action pictures of TJ Baldwin you've got there!
Did you move down after the first 30 or so as you have some nice ones in the finish area as well. Are you restricted because of the softness of the tracks?

kooky, Here is the link to his run.
http://tj-ski.com/?q=node/132
Only just viewed it myself. Looked pretty good to me. Yes he was one of the youngest and probably the smallest. At only 5'8" (173cm) & 12 1/2 st (78kg) not built like most of the other Downhillers.
Team GB has also not got a dedicated speed coach like all the alpine nations and having had only 4 days DH training prior to the start of the season so he is still pretty rusty. It was pretty soft too by the time he went down, very sticky snow.

kooky, Mrs B did not watch just ate some cake!! He skis on 215's the minimum length for any FIS race.
freeheelskier, He is 20. His thighs are like tree trunks anyway. He squats almost twice his own body weight and can do reps of 10 standing jumps onto a 3' 6" vaulting horse, then a single leg jump onto the same horse!

Plugboy, He is young, he has near 10 year to ski before he is on maximum in downhill, as I have wrote in onother thread, the alpine race world must be bigger,, good luck to this young man

I'd be interested to know, how much difference there is, in the Ski's given to someone like Cuche and TJ. Are we talking about a neglegiable difference that can be made up by the ski tecnician or an amount that could never be made up, regardless of how well he ski's?

Very very warm during the mens race towards the end same as the womens today, was in a tshirt. We climbed up the rather steep side to watch from just by the side of the freierfall jamp...and it was really hard work going up because it was so steep, so god knows how hard it wsa going down, certainly the noise the skier skiers make landing the jump was far louder then I would have thought.
Atmosphere in town was brilliant and great to see TJ make the whole course and chatted to some guy who was wlaking with him out of the stadium, coach i presume about his performance, and saying he was looking forward to the super combined.
well done Eric Guay aswell, he looked completely taken aback by it all untill he got the medal round his neck, then he just beamed.
never heard so many cow bells in my life!
