Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alpine trekkers

Any one tried these? I am thinking of getting a pair and some used skins off ebay to get a bit of extra access to off piste, without resorting to full touring kit. some of the skins don't appear to be full width to the ski. is this a major problem? as I dont particularly want to wedge out for a new cut to fit skin, just to get a "taster". Presumably downhill boots will also limit the amount of skinning you do (maybe 15 mins?).

skinning with proper touring kit is a more pleasant experience but people have done very long tours with trekkers and normal alpine boots. that setup will be fine for exactly what you propose

if you can get a cheapo deal on some skins which are too narrow, get a sharp knife and split them lengthways, leaving 6 inches or so at either end. when you put the skins on your skis you can make the bits which have been split are close to the edge of your skis underfoot. again, this isn't as good as having properly fitted skins and can be a bit messy (more bits of gluey material to stick to themselves and other things) but it will work fine provided you aren't attempting very steep skin tracks (which you probably won't be if you are on trekkers)

I split my skins following the advice from Arno, seemed to work fine on a 20/25 min uphill....

I also have some secura fix trekker type adapters for sale..
