Spain is a good country for skiing, but people dont realise that, all pyrenees have excelent resorts from east to west, And Masella, 1h15 min drive from Barcelona have what I know the longest season for a resort with no glacier in europe, open beginning november and closed when the snow is finnish, last year 12th may, and they used to have open to at least 1may,, there is one little resort east of Masella, Vallter 2000, thear U clearly days can see the Mediterian sea,, And the area that have the snowdump now, near Picos de Europa in the northeast, (I had about it in another thread) is very interresting, beacause there is some of europes best surfing spots near,, there is alot of skier and snowboarder that like me, like surfing, so to go to this area, and have a car is fantastic,, And in the south, the big resort Sierra Nevada, where U from the top can see Africa with the Atlas Mountain,, Madrid have also resorts near, but to crowdy, and near Valencia there is 2 resort, Javalambre and Valdelinares, but this is not resort for skiing one week, Even the district La Rioja have a resort, Valdezcaray, why not ski and test vines? for me as telemarkskier Spain is fantastic, they have toghether with Scandinavia and Italy, the best telemarkskier in Europe,, VIVA España

Now is snowing again, and also in all resorts in Spain, the most snow come in Sierra Nevada, near 50cm with powder, there will also be a dump in northwest,in the area near Picos de Europa, near 30 cm in a few days, western pyrenees, for example Formigal, expect 30cm, centralpyrenees a little less, and easterpyrenees, Andorra, Masella/La Molina and Vallter 2000 just a few cm,

My only memory of the pyrenees was relatively poor snow. We spent one of 2 weeks being bused to Pas De La Casa when we should have been skiing in La Molina. When they did open resort very little was actually open.
Is it just we were unlucky (I was only a kid when we went there) or is it less snow sure than the Alps?
Thanks

U was unlucky,, If you say that a shorter season means less snowsure, yes its less with snow, its use to be good with snow from xmas time to end of mars, and regulary the western pyrenees are better. but in the east Masella near La Molina, access with a gondola, have a very long season, from early november to beginnng may, but that is with artificial snow, I also used every year make alpine touring beginning to middle of may in the Pyrenees or Picos de Europa, in northwest of Spain, and with local skiier I always find good runs to ski

freeheelskier, been to Sierra nevada on honeymoon and loved it!
By the way, I think Cairngorm in Scotland had a long season to match Masella last year! Starting on 29th november, and last lift served skiing on mid-summer's day on 21st jun (that was just a rope tow, but the main top lifts were operating until 5th june)
I would like to go back to ski in Spain sometime, I hear there is a big telemark scene too?

barry, But have Cairngorm open everyday?,,, Yes telemark is big in spain, specaly in Pyrenees and Picos de Europa, there is more telemarkskiers in spain than in french alps
