Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The future of powder skiing?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I think I'll stay in the luddite camp for now.

Powder is the easy bit, I want something to get me along the scary ridge first, and down the icy path at the end.
Stiff enough it will hold an edge on glacier ice, no more than 90mm underfoot so I can change edges quickly on the bumped exit path.
Not ridiculously heavy so I can skin up things, but solid enough it will blast through crud.

Actualy a bit like my Mythics ...

You can, its fun, I have, skied powder quite effectively on my 165 slalom skis.

(Lights blue touch paper & stands well back ...)

That's why we have quivers of skis. The Spoon certainly isn't designed for that sort of terrain.

It's purpose is change the way you actually float through deep deep pow.

The more extreme the ski, the narrower its niche. Be great to have specialist skis (and a caddy to cart them around for you) for when conditions are just right for them. That DSP ski looks incredibly scary for anything other than open bowls of good snow.

That's what the cleats are for! Although edging a 150mm reverse ski will require a few extra squats in the gym.....

I would have thought an extra yoga session might be better in the long run...

Arno, I love the concept of 3D snow - I've never heard deep powder described like that before, but it makes sense - I used to work for a guy whose all consuming passion was sailing (racing) - he called it playing chess on a 3 D chess board - I can comprehend the shape in comparison with kayaks etc. as well - what an excellent idea to describe the concept for me. Parlours explanation still rather lost me, but working on 3D snow does it for me Very Happy

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Megamum, I've been looking for some videos to how the way people are actually moving through the snow is evolving too, which I think would help you visualize why this ski shape is 'the future'. It's hard though, I get distracted and watch the films instead...

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

You separate them & put them side by side so they look really wide, then you put them on top of your ski boot so they look really long.
Much easier than lugging about a 237 - 198 - 202 with Marker Dukes, and they actually work !

You also need bright yellow ski pants, and a ruck-sack with all the knarly bits on the outside (an ice-axe is especially good).
On no account should you have an ABS pack, because then you actually would have thought about safety.
A helmet with a chin guard is essential, conversation should revolve around the swing weight of said helmet.
Having your braces hanging round your knees is a major plus.
Of course you will then need to head straight to the cafe because you have over heated carrying so much crap about,
but at least that means you don't actualy have to show whether you can ski or not ..

And don't forget to call everyone dude, preferably really loudly.
