Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

In the chaos that was Grenoble airport today I saw the (slowest on the planet) check in staff tell someone they couldn't take his boots as hand luggage, he replied his laptop was in the boot bag as well and without any checks was allowed to take them on.

Hi- just in reply to a post further up querying the fact that Grenoble Airport dont let ski boots through the airport security. I emailed them as Im travelling there in a few weeks and was planning on trying this as I dont want to pay easyjet. This was their reply Very Happy

I carried my boots in my hand luggage a few times from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, check-in staff or Easyjet staff were not concerned. Once I was stopped by staff at the security scanner, was told boots were not allowed and I had to rush back out to the checkin desk and put them in the hold. Luckily no charge! Have not tried it since. This was the security staff, not Easyjet or Servisair.

Latest datapoint on this - Luton airport last weekend.

One of our party, clearly carrying a boot bag with boots in it, was made to repack at checkin to put his boots in his holdall.
Another of our party, with boots in a 'normal' carry on bag, was not spotted at checkin and allowed to carry them through security and onto the plane.

The basic message appears to be "don't ask don't tell". As long as you're not flying somewhere like Southend where the airport is very tightly coupled to Easyjet.

I'm off to Avoriaz at Easter with EJ (Liverpool-Geneva) and have just bought my first boots and which I'm already pretty attached to as they've transformed my skiing. Obviously don't want to lose them and have been reading this and other threads with muchos interest.

I'd really like to know if the desire to take ski boots on as hand-luggage is an insurance against them getting nicked by unscrupulous baggage staff? Or if there's another reason for this. I'll be using a Dakine split-loader travel bag which I'm pretty sure will take my bubble-wrapped boots, helmet (ahem) and all clothing etc pretty easily so ideally I'd like to put it all in there, that is unless there's a good reason I shouldn't do this.

SiPieFace, Just bang them in your hold, luggage. All will be well. Bubble wrap WTF? You won't need no bubble wrap after you've bashed 'em up on the hill for a week Toofy Grin

My sister and brother in law carried boots back in hand baggage from Gva on easyJet after Christmas - no problem - not in boot bags.

Yeah, but they're brand spanking! First ever pair. I want to at least keep 'em mint until I get to the slopes. Madeye-Smiley

So is there then no reason why boots shouldn't then just go in your suitcase? Sure I've read something about ski boots getting nicked, people using coloured zip ties, special locks etc. If there's no reason to not do this what's the advantage of taking them as hand luggage? Is it just for those who take LOADS of clothes and hair product and have no space in their suitcase?

I always take mine in my hold luggage. They're too heavy and bulky to cart around! If I was changing planes, however, I would reconsider. The only time I have had luggage go astray has been in these circumstances.

They're heavy - so if your baggage is a bit near the limit, the boots might push it over. My sister and BiL did it because they had pretty well packed the night before a very early start and the boots were pretty wet, and left on driers overnight.

I always put mine in my hold luggage, but I understand why some people prefer not to - and my helmet always goes in hand luggage.

It isn't common, but is by no means unknown for hold luggage to be delayed (or even go missing entirely), and people might be prepared to hire skis for the first day or two, and even clothing, but not boots once they have their own.

I take the helmet in hand luggage because that way I know it hasn't been thrown around out of my sight.

Look, just put your liners in your hand luggage . . . If you have to rent, at least you'll be comfortable and you have padding in your pack for loose crap and fragiles. Then put your shells in the hold stuffed full of socks undies base layers etc.

On a separate note, travelling to London from Geneva on Friday with EJ the flight was overbooked. Luckily I had prebooked my seat and printed off the boarding pass, else I would have been bumped from the flight, even though I was there 70 minutes before the flight.

The tip from the check-in staff was to always make sure you check-in online before the flight

Nice tip. Does this allow you to select the actual seat position you'd like or is it just a general check-in then a seat free-for-all when you get on the plane? I ask because I've never flown EasyJet.

We flew EJ from Luton to Geneva on 12th Jan this year, and then back again a week later. Both times 7 of us carried boots on as hand luggage and I'd agree with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy; at the check-in desk we all crowded round en masse and created a degree of confusion. The check-in person did ask to see the hand luggage of a couple of girls but they just sort of showed them the straps and we all moved on. I think if it was clear that we had boots in our bag then it would have been a different story.

Monarch on the other hand... We're flying with them next month and they specifically say no boots in hand luggage (purely for money making purposes no doubt) BUT more annoyingly, only allow 1 pair of skis per ski bag and nothing else. With EJ we put 2 pairs of skis in a double bag and pay for 1 carriage - Monarch force you to pay for 2.
