Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Park/Powder ski advice

Hi folks,

Just got back from a week skiing in Les Gets and had an awesome time. Sadly not much off piste to be had, but the groomers were in top form despite the lack of snow since christmas. Anyway, I digress. I am wanting to purchase a pair of new skis to get into freestyle that also function as a decent pair of powder skis too. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch.

Tordi what kind of skier are you ?
And what is your shoe size ?

The Pale RS 15 gets great reviews here for people who like to ski at medium speed.

Tordi, there are off piste freestyle skis out on the market, if you have a look around, there are quite a few good cross overs that work in the park and off piste.

If you want to start at the total off piste end of freestyle then look at the Movement Flyswatters that we do, and work down from there until you find a balance, we have tried the Movement Baggy and also the Sluff and they both work well off piste and in the park.

I'd say that I'm a reasonably fast intermediate/advanced skier (ski all levels of piste). I haven't done a great deal of off piste, but was hoping to get into it, along with some freestyle. I have some Salomon lady skis which are semi twin tipped, but they were my first skis so my binding placement was standard and therefore not great for learning to ride switch. My shoe size is 7.

The choice in this range is enormous now !
The specialist manufacturers in this area would be Armada, Line etc.....almost their entire range would sound suitable....
If you need to opt for skis with a more freeride/powder bias with a twintip then the Volkl Gotama/Atomic Blog/Atomic Access/K2 Kung Fujas could be suitable......its really a case of checking all the manufacturers as they all do them now and determining your preference!

Hi Tordi - its a tough choice....
Out of interest what colour are your current skis ?
Could you also measure the ratio of your ski length to your poles ?
Then we might have some ideas and suggestions snowHead

My Salomon lady skis are turquoise and white, the ones from 07/08 I think, only 153s. Bought them a bit short for manoeuvrability (I'm 5'6''). I have just bought some K2 Burnin Luv piste carvers too which are 160's for shredding on the hardpack. My ski poles are 115cm I think.

Tordi

Have you tried shorter ski poles ?
It really helps in the powder snowHead
Maybe you could also look at adding the new Salomon twin tip adapters to your current skis ?

Do you prefer blue or red runs ?
And what is your star sign ?

Tordi, ^^^ yep.

I wouldn't worry about the binding placement, the only reason to have a centre mount is if you are really chucking big spins and landing big jumps switch. It will screw up how the ski performs everywhere else.

What do you think of the Ladies? Do you want fatter, longer, shorter, lighter... Will you be keeping them or replacing them? What do you not like about them and what to improve?

The ladies were great as a first ski as they do well in crud etc. They are pretty poor on hardpack and ice though, hence the reason for buying some proper piste carvers like the Burnin Luvs. I think the ladies were fat enough (tee hee) but a proper twin tip would be nice, and possibly something a bit lighter and longer. I reckon I will sell the ladies to purchase something new.

Tordi, The Mai Tai's get great feedback from my other half she loves them and uses them for a little bit of everything, Basic Park, Off Piste mostly and some on piste.

Other options are anything by Line but the will not be great out of the park

Head have some really nice park stuff at the moment aswell

My girlfriend has the Line Celebrity's, she loves them for everything, park, piste and offpiste. They're fat enough to help with float off piste and give more stability on landings.

I've got armadas and love them plus i've only ever heard good things about them so the ARVW could be worth a look.
Also the MissBehaved by K2, lots of seasonnaires had them when i was doing my last season. They've got "jib rocker now" which would help with the off piste as well.

Tordi, remember that if you go for a centre mount to make freestyle easier it will have a negative impact on its overall handling especially in powder as your weight will be further forward. You could solve this problem by going for a marker schizio which are adjustable but they aren't cheap. Otherwise i would keep the bindings in the normal position. Don't women have a slightly further foward mounting anyway?
