Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

.....having seen the gratuitous over use of a certain photo on the EPIC 'Arcteryx sidewinder' thread rolling eyes , i have a question, are your goggles the Iridium Fire lens version of the Wisdom's?I'm thinking of treating myself to a pair and am intrigued with the 'fire' lens, good in all conditions?.......anyone else have a pair of these?........er, thats 3 questions, obviously rolling eyes

OK, they are A-frames, not Wisdoms, but the Fire Iridium lens, for me, is the best. Excellent in low visibility, and very good in really bright conditions too.

excitableboy, I used Oakley lenses for years for competive shooting & have virtually every lens they do for my M frames - IMO they're the best lenses around. Their customer service is brilliant but their UK price structure (read cartell) stinks. Best if you or a pal can buy in person in the USA & bring them back with you or post them to you as a gift. You'll still save a good few quid by buying mail order from the US, even allowing for possible duty & VAT if HM Costums home in on the parcel.

My choices are also Oakley A frames. Wisdom's are too big for me & certainly won't fit me with my Giro 9 helmet. My lens choices for skiing are as follows:

Oakley Fire Iridiums for bright light. The black iridium being a bit too dark, causing a lack of contrast/definition which can get a bit hairy when you speed through a shaded area & suddenly can't see the contours. As Foxy says, they're also pretty good in low light if needs must but I always carry a spare specialist low light pair.

And for low light their Hi Blue Iridium lens, which is actually yellow, way better than persimmon (although the Oakley persimmon lens is still very good & a lot cheaper than the HBI) - it's like somebody turned the light on!

One caution, they're a bitch to change the lenses & if you do so often you can wear the locating nodes down so there's no real point in buying a pair of goggles with a spare different coloured lens. For that reason Oakley market their spare lenses as 'replacement' lenses in case of damage, rather than 'interchangeable' lenses.

Oakley have a new low light lens for next year, it looks kind of yellowy-greeny-gold iridium like - apparently in flat light it is awesome - but you go blind if the sun even thinks of coming out!
I use HI persimmon (like normal orange persimon lens but with a blue iridium coating) which I find works well in all conditions. Personally I don't like using high brightness lenses (such as black iridium, blue iridium, fire, etc) because I find that even on the sunniest days you'll find yourself skiing in shadows where the darker lenses mean you lose definition.
I don't bother with interchanging the lens - it only cost £20 more for a whole set of googles, so rather than faffing with changing the lens (and risking breaking it) I just change googles

Gluhwein's bad enough in an ordinary container. Serving it in a plastic cup is the ultimate insult - they'd might as well throw it in your face.

I can't find any info on this new Oakley low light lens. Do you mean the HI yellow? If so, it's been available for a long while in specs (I've an M frame lens in it) but as far as I know it hasn't been available yet in a goggle. Can you shed any light on it? (Pun intended wink )

Although the low light lenses give very high percentage light transmission (the HI blue & HI yellow being equal highest) there's no danger of you suddently becoming dazzled/blinded as they're all 100% UV & anti glare coated etc.

I agree with your comments re the black & blue iridiums for the exact same reasons (in certain conditions the blue could be pretty dangerous) however the fire iridium lens doesn't suffer from this fault - IMO due to the fact that the base colour of the uncoated lens is actually persimmon.

Kleine Scheidegg can be found in my favorite part of Switzerland, the only reason the tipi serves stuff in plastic cups is its location Kleine Schidegg is a very hectic place and the tipi is right on the platform so most of the glasses are plastic to avoid accidents with people falling over stuff onto broken glass

It was an Oakley sponsored skier I spent some time skiing with last season who had it for his flat light lens - it definitely wasn't any of the colours available in the 2004/2005 google range (not sure what HI yellow is but this one looked like a pale greenish-yellow base with a goldish iridium coating). He said Oakley had sent it to him to try out - he was suitably impressed

Maybe he was exaggerating the going blind bit a bit!! wink

Maybe I'll have to give the fire lens a try, not done so because it looks like a super sunny lens, but maybe I should give it a second look - My HI persimon is superb in most conditions but on extremely bright days is not quite up to the job. I also have a Gold Iridium which is great in bright light but not so good in the shadows

What is a good price for a pair of A Frames with iridium lenses?
As i've seen them on sale for ~£75 or ~$120 US on the web and there doesn't seem to be much difference, but I would normally expect the US price to be cheaper.
Any thoughts?

davidb, Oakley have a fixed price, which is supposed to be global, so, apart from exchange rate fluctuations, they all tend to be about the right price. Sometimes you will get older models reduced, but if you see a current model for a lot less than everywhere else, be aware that it may not be genuine.

Yeah right. Work for oakley by any chance?

Alright the old if it seems to good to be true then it is rule obviously applies but basically in this country we get screwed, especially on skis and associated gear.

Just dont buy oakley or anything else your relying on the performance of from ebay for the sake of price

Wear The Fox Hat, I have an interest in a large independent Oakley dealership. Oakley are absolutely adamant that dealers are at liberty to sell their product at whatever price they wish, to order them to do otherwise as I'm sure you realise is illegal. Fact is most UK dealers choose not to discount Oakley product. I'm not sure if there is parity between US & UK rrp's but would suggest the difference is more down to volume of sales over there than simply the exchange rate.

So why don't they then? I've always managed to negotiate discounts on a wide range of items in stores that sell Oakley eyewear - however they all tell me they're 'not allowed' to discount the Oakley stuff (eg Nevisport, Nottingham). If Oakley aren't officially running a cartel then their UK dealers have agreed to an unofficial one - JMO of course, don't want to get sued wink

I was told by both Nevisport & Castle Mountian & Moor in Nottingham that their Oakley googles are supplied on an S.O.R. basis which removes the need to discount them at the end of the season to get rid etc.

The US dealers also follow the strict list price rule which matches Oakley's web site where you can buy online if you live in the States.

The cheapest way to buy Oakley specs/goggles is to buy them in the US, and the dearer the list price the better the deal, ie Iridium Wisdoms at £110 in the UK are $130 in the US - at $1.75/£1 that's £75!

For the record I am a huge fan of Oakley lenses with probably over 30 variations - mostly provided foc from Oakley when I was a National Team pistol shooter competing in World, European & National competitions, so I've a lot to thank them for. Oakley's customer service is also great. It's just their prices in the UK that stink.

I skied last year with an optician who had some really trick lens in his oakley wisdoms goggles. I've got some A frame with plain yellow lens for flat light, but swapping with him was like switching to terminator infra-red mode. I'm not sure what they were called, but from what he told me, they were hellishly expensive.
