Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Niederau vs Seefeld

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We've recently returned from a great week in Niederau. I'd happily go back (great people, great village, good value, etc) however the skiing was a little too limited for us. We skied the blues and managed some of the shorter reds. However, we struggled when our instructor took us down the red that gets you back to the village. We could perservere and return next year but Seefeld seems to have more gentler slopes.

So my question is, what's the difference between Seefeld and Niederau? Is seefeld as friendly? Niederau was v. cheap for a pint and a spag bol, is Seefeld the same?

Thanks, Pete

Not been to Seefeld myself but friends of mine have been twice. Price of food and drinks in the village were higher than other parts of Austria they have been to. The slopes were mostly easy though there were more difficult ones on the mountain that you can access via the rack railway. However the village itself was apparently very nice with a traffic free centre. The slopes though required the ski bus to get to but obvisouly dependant on where your hotel is located.

PeteMan, skied both and would advise someone coming out for their holiday to use the Wildschonau to get way better value for the money.

Both get a lot of weekenders when the snow is good so they tend to be very busy. Both required use of the buses to make full use of the facilities on the lift pass, but in the Wildschonau you get at least one of the three areas on your doorstep.

Seefeld has a very upmarket view of itself which means lots of posh hotels, casino and the inevitable fur coat brigade. That tends to push up prices. I found the Wildschonau much more realistic and value for money.

As I said I ski both and have stayed in both. I enjoyed both resorts but on reflection would select Nierderau (the first of the 3 areas in the Wildschonau ski area) over Seefeld for a week's holiday. It has more runs and a better variety of runs and uplift. The funicular is a bottle-neck on the Rosshütte side although it is the better of the two areas for skiing. The chairs and lifts on the other side (forgotten the name for now) are easier to use but the runs are very short and easy.

hope that helps

if you find Niederau limited then you will find Seefeld even worst. It is more of a cross country ski destination and the town itself is quite upmarket. if you want some where with more runs than Niederau but not too expensive have a look at St Johann in Tirol or Fieberbrunn both have reasonable ski area's and are linked on their lift pass, St Johan has better access to the slopes but Fieberbrunn has a better if not smaller ski area. I would use St johann as the base and you take the free ski bus to both Fieberunn and Steinplatte/Waidring whihc are all on the same lift pass

Hi, The Niederau bank is the Raiffeisen Bank. There is a Sparkasse Bank in Oberau and another Raiffeisen. (Oberau is 5 mins away)

You're welcome! Enjoy your visit and I think you have chosen the best place as Niederau is a lovely place where you will get a warm welcome, great pistes, reasonable prices and so on. There is more snow forecast for thursday according to local radio. Carolyn

Good evening.
Am thinking of booking the Hotel Austria for the 5th Feb so have a couple of questions as a little worried.
1. What is the Hotel Austria like?
2. All of the snow forecast websites are saying not a lot of snow or forecast. So does anyboy know what the conditions are like or the forecast?
Kindest Regards
Dean

Deaninnorwich, Welcome to snowHeads snowHead

Are you asking about Seefeld or Niederau?

There are Hotel Austrias in both I believe. It is a fairly commonly used name for a hotel in Austria in general.

Generally we are expecting snow over most of the Tirol this week, but places like Seefeld have suffered a lot in this recent warm spell. A lot can happen though in the 2 weeks you have before you come out here. Smile

We were at the Hotel Austria over new year and had a fab time. The reviews on TripAdvisor do not do it justice. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly. Food was great (with a veg option every night). Drinks were very reasonable (€3.30 for large beer and couple of euros for a hot chocolate). Location wise the hotel is perfect, the gondola and nursery slopes are across the road and the free ski bus stop is outside the hotel. Ski hire shop is in the basement and the red ski school is opposite.

We simple did not encounter some of the negative points that other reviewers have experienced (surly staff, poor food and loud bells from the chuch down the road).

My advice, go for it!

Hi, I live in Niederau and quite often go to the Austria when we want to eat out. Good food with a wide choice and the hotel is certainly very handy for all the skiing, Enjoy!

Would Obergurgl be similar to Niederau from a compact village feel perspective plus the wide range of Blues (in Hochgurgl) that I am looking for?

PeteMan, no not really - try looking at somewhere like Wagrain in Salzburgerland or some of the Zillertal resorts. Ellmau and Söll have a nice atmosphere but I found out that the blues are somewhat intimidating to nervous or unsure beginners recently. I didn't think they were before I took an adult beginner/intermediate around on a 1:1 basis 2 weeks ago. Embarassed I sincerely hope I have not put her off skiing for life Sad

To my mind Ober- and Hochgurgl are rather sadly now more akin to the French up market resorts these days, sorry to say! Much nocer in summer though wink

Learned to ski in Niederau (few years ago now) and spent this New Year in Obergurgl. Blues in Obergurgl are not the same as Niederau which I think would feel too beginnerish for me now. But thought skiing at Obergurgl was great - so want to go back!!
