Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Not allowed on a school trip

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My boss mentioned to me a few weeks ago that his 9 year old son had come from school with details of a school skiing trip next year that he'd like to go on, especially as all his mates were going.

Now said son is a whizz bang soccer player & plays for the Nottingham Forest Academy. He also excels at any other sport he tries.

When I asked my boss what's the latest with the trip he told me that Forest have said that he can't go due to the risk of injury.

This seems somewhat of an over reaction to me.

Too right, what utter rubbish!!You can understand the likes of Beckham being banned from snow sports(on his recent family trip)but a 9yr old.Sounds to me as if someone is trying to overprotect a future, possible prospect?Presumably its OK for him to get a broken leg on a soccer pitch, cos that's a 'proper' sport rolling eyes

He's basically got a choice between a totally pointless sport and a sport of the utmost gravity. I don't mess around with either of these activities personally - it's enough work wandering around mountains scaring people - but if I had a son I'd basically tell him to tell these people to s*d off.

Doesn't sound right to me either. Ok, eventually the demands of a single sport become too great as stricter control of all cross-training has to be in the hands of one trainer, a choice having to be made. At that time, a "second favourite" sport has to be put well on the back burner. But at nine? I don't think so. On the contrary, practising a single sport, exclusively, can leave kids seriously lacking. Hence at the ski academy here, within the curriculum, there are gymnastics, football, rugby, wresting, canoeing, basketball, volleyball, rock climbing, running, cycling, orienteering, swimming, triathlon, as well as both alpine and nordic skiing. That's in school time. The ski racing club picks up on the cross-training in off-season holidays - the school breaks up this coming Friday, and for six days out of seven over the first four weeks of the summer holiday kids will spend half their time on the slopes of the glacier, the other half running, roller blading, and cycling.

The school and club are even content to allow kids to practise a further sport intensively in their own time, up to age thirteen or fourteen. I know of three who do judo at competition level (already blue to brown belts at 12 to 14), one who does distance running at county level.

They believe that more rounded sportspeople emerge, better able to confront the demands of a single sport practised at elite level, should they ever make it that far. Experienced in the self-discipline required of the individual athlete, understanding of the demands and sacrifices made when playing as part of a team. Physically rounded. Able to take knocks. Mentally tough.

Yes, some drop by the wayside - but not usually from physical problems, mostly because they are not able to stand the pace mentally. However the theory is that those are the ones who wouldn't have made it to the top anyway...

Typical of footbal academies. They are not interested in the overall development of the child. Its football, football, football.

I agree with PG, . I was an international swimmer and from a young age relied on a variety of sporting activities and disciplines to build up stamina, strength, flexibility etc. Cross training continued to be a part of my training routine right the way through my career. Funnily enough the only sport I did not do was skiing and that was because the school trip coincided with a swim meet.

I would say let him go and maybe he will excel at skiing and we could have a future champion in our midst.....

My guess is that due to their abysmal form over the last few seasons, Forest expect him to be a 1st team regular by Feb.

It's ridiculous, and positively unhealthy, but if the poor kid will be chucked out of the 'Nottingham Forest Academy' (three words I'd never have expected to see next to each other, but there you are), there's a big decision to be made. If the lad's a great footballer, maybe he'll have to do without skiing and other fun activities. Poor little chap.

If the NFA will not chuck him out, I hope that he goes.

A skier freind of mine was also a footballer in his youth but found the skiing really hard work as he got older because of the damage to his knees done by football. Also met a footballer once who told me he would love to have a skiing holiday due to his knee problems couldn't. I say let the boy go skiing whilst his knees are still intact.

spyderjon, are YOU prevented from skiing? Coz, obviously, if you go off on the white stuff there's a risk that you'll injure yourself and thus junior will be deprived of adequate familial support for his footie....

Methinks you need to wrap yourself in cottonwool and stay a home, off the slopes, just in case. wink

Many many years ago when I was a youngster I often skied with a girl who was an up and coming ballerina, if she could go skiing I don't see why the 9 year old boy couldn't, I suspect it's down to an irational fear on behalf of the football club that he'll break something, but so long as he has decent teachers it's probably very unlikely that any serious injury will occur

spyderjon, My brother was at Reading Academy when he first started skiing- my mum basically told them to sod off and get a life as she wasnt letting her (then 10yr old) son be denied a fun family holiday for the sake of their team!

Its up to the parents to tell the academy where to go in this instance. Secondly, he's 9yrs old, the chances they'll still want him when hes 12 are minimal- so let him live!

Funnily enough Reading never did drop my brother- he left last year because " he wanted to hang out with his mates at the weekend and play for his school " - another thing he was denied by Reading FC. Incidently, these academies arent around to grow players for their own teams- its a money making machine, they cream off the top in the hope of selling them on once theyre older, its madness

Nadenoodlee & all, I totally agree with you all. It's all about punting the Academy kids on to the high level clubs for mega bucks as early as they can.

The problem is my boss is most definately a 'pushy parent' when it comes to the possibility of his son being a pro soccer player (he was 'nearly' a pro himself, which are the worst kind) so he'd never stand up to the Academy. Pity for his son. I'm sure he'd be damned good skier as well.

Unless they have a contract or agreement ( very unlikely at that age, even illegal ) then they can't demand anything and the boys is free to go if the parents wish. The team might make it difficult when he gets back but they will not cut off their nose to spit their face. He may well be a sub for a few games if the coach gets petty about it.

I can't see why football should be any worse on knees than skiing. If those knees are injured then the strain would show in any sport.

The one thing that knees must have is good strong muscles carrying the load and not ligamants, which the the latter is detectable at a very base level by pain in the joints. Or rather I should quantify that by saying that for knee pain the first thing to question is, are my muscles upto it..??

Absolutely. Also if they're providing free coaching etc then I think that they do have a right to expect a level of commitment from their pupils. If he doesn't want to go along with it (which doesn't actually sound as if it is the case here), then there will be plenty of others who would jump at the chance.

9 years old? That's just ridiculous. I have had 3 holidays without breaking anything and I've been down runs which scared the cr*p out of me and still survived to carry on with my dinghy sailing. And put it this way - I'm not the most careful skier in the world!
Send him skiing - football is boring, worthless and overpayed anway. What a pile of rubbish!

Kramer, Kenzie, LOL!
Anyone who knows me well enough knows I am completely against football as a stupidly overpayed international money-getter. It's far too serious. I don't actually have a problem with actual football (although I find it way too boring, I'm the sort to be flying down a hill, across a lake or up a climbing wall) I just have a problem with the stupid money-spinning hype and commercialisation!
There. I feel better! It's way too hot!

Footbal(soccer) Is not nearly as big in skiing is the US. Skiing is such a better sport (just my opinion). I have nore fun skiing than anything else. Also a great feeling of acomplishment when your staring down a 50 to 55 degree run, Scared Crapless. But you drop it anyways and at the bottom with no injuries you are King just for a while. I dont know about you but scoring a goal isnt anywheres near that satisfaction.

Let the boy go. Nine years old is way to young to start being serious about life already. He's going to grow up to fast!

Just my opinion folks. Hope I offended noone.

huckingfellers, I'm not sure how you can compare two sports as different as football and skiing. That seems to be to be a good reason why the lad should be abe to do both.

spyderjon, If you take snowboarding out of the injury figures then ski-ing is approx 4x safer than playing football (kickabout in the park), presumably playing serious football is much riskier. Tell your boss to insist that the team produce a valid reason and valid injury figures comparing both sports - I bet they haven't even looked into it! They're still in the 50's with leather boots and non release bindings.

BTW I've been ski-ing for 49 years now, professionally and full time for the last 30 - I raced as a youngster and have only been seriously injured once about 10 years ago. I also rode horses to a high level of competition and at school played lacrosse (much more injurious) and swam for the school - this is totally ridiculous as PG says it could even be counter-productive to the boy becoming a pro footballer. This attitude is totally out of date, and could well be why Nottingham Forest is such a lousy team!

crazy_skier_jules, I also dislike the "sport" (huh - what?) but nominally support Arsenal!!!!! Actually I don't really care what happens, but you have to have a team in my job! Pro footballers are stupid prima donnas - they should learn something from Hermann Maier and stop moaning about every little knock. Twisted Evil

I've broken a bone playing football and broken a bone skiing, both within the same year. I think they're equally dangerous! wink

Put it this way: I get down a red safely albeit slowly and a bit terrified. When I'm playing team running sports, I usually end up doing my ankle in and having to sit out. And I did my wrist in after getting jumped on in Army Cadets. Stupid fat boy jumped on me! But hey, no injuries from skiing!
easiski, you are quite right. They are stupid premaddonas, they should just shut up and get on with it, the Herminator is a lesson to us all that anything is possible even if you have been badly injured.

Of course the expect commitment and the places may be in demand but sooner or later sports will get down to who needs who...if you are gifted then they will want to keep you, if you are not then they will want to let you go.
At the age of 9 you should do what you want to do, plenty of time to get serious later...

spyderjon, It is not just football where this happens. A mate of mine's son is a really good tennis player and by the age of eight or nine I think he was being told what he could and could not do for his tennis career, so he in the end stopped playing for the Regional team I think. Shame but his Dad wanted him to have a life - mind you I expect Andrew Murray is doing quite well on this week's winnings.

Probably, but he seems a miserable b*gger, doesn't he? I suppose if you've done nothing but play tennis (or anything else) since the age of 7 you're not going to have a personality.
