I think so - my skis always come apart when i'm schlepping around the resort!!

I use them for transport in the ski bag, to/from the slopes if a bus ride is required and in the rack overnight. Never during the day.

Absolutley no need at all - brakes hold the skis together: carry them (properly) tips forward & they never come apart.
Different if you ski telemark however....

Stop the bases scratching the hell out of each other in the ski bag when being transported, other than that not needed as geoffers, states

Unless you have "Rozzy" bindings that is - a pain in the a*** to me as they just do not clip together

They are invaluable for helping kids in particular carry their skis any distance to the slope without almightly 'dropping' incidents. That said I will stick one on my own skis if I have any distance to walk.
