Poster: A snowHead

I'm off to Les Houches on Sunday, but unfortunately the snow doesn't look very good there at the moment! I've already booked the hotel, and we're going for a couple of nights, so I would like some suggestions for where to go nearby to find better snow! We need easy slopes (green/ blue), and preferably on the bus route from Les Houches!
Thanks

Chamonix's higher slopes (which really means the Grand Montets) don't meet the description of "easy", Ricklovesthepowder. Even Brevent/Flegere, which is not a lot higher, is quite a lot more difficult.
That's a difficult one. Faced with exactly the same dilemma some years ago (also in January, v poor snow) we did find Le Tour had better snow than Les Houches (though it was fiendish busy and we queued forever to get up there, first to buy the pass, then again to get in the lift). We tried Flaine, too, but frankly it wasn't much better - inches deep in water and slush at resort level. The very top was better but there isn't a lot of it!
It's been raining to well over 2000m at times and very warm, with a foehn wind. BUT there's a good chance that tomorrow night and Monday will provide some nice snow.

Yes, unfortunately we still need very easy slopes! But we're not so fussy, so even if there is one or two, we don't mind as long as we can ski on it!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

munchimo, I hope you find the snow you need. I'm heading to Combloux in Feb with similar requirements. It would be useful to hear how you get on.

if you have a car you are around 40 mins from les contamines and megeve

Les Contamines a better bet than Megeve, I'd say (and cheaper). Only problem is that the higher and more snowsure runs in Les Contamines are mainly red - though not hard ones.

munchimo, the top of LHs is probably fine, and snow is forecast. You're only there for a couple of nights and your requirements are very "low" so I reckon you'll be fine.

How about the higher slopes at Le Grand Bornard or La Clusaz?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Snow is forecast for tonight/tomorrow. You can still ski down the village/bottom.
Pistes are ok, especially those that have been cannoned previously.
At the top La Cha (Blue) is perfect, as is the one next to it (name escapes me).
Les Houches definately has less patches than Le Tour currently has.
Cheers.

Les Contamines is not far if you have transport, lots of nice easy skiing there, is covered on the Mont Blanc pass and often has much better snow than other parts of the Cham area.

You know it makes sense.

Was in Les Contamines today. We started from the Belleville (Hauteluce Valley) side and didn't go further down than the middle gondola station, but found very good snow cover. A few grassy patches, but very few, and I saw no proper ice. Snow OK even right down to the bottom at Belleville. The Veleray sector is closed, but that's fairly often the case and I have to admit it doesn't bother me, being a little old lady.
Pistes were quiet. Hugely more noticeable English presence than we're used to.
We noticed a few groups being led by UCPA instructors. I don't think there's a UCPA centre in Les Contamines, is there? We noticed them from a chairlift (the fantastic new detachable Nant Rouge chair - a vast improvement ). It would be interesting to know where they'd come from. Somewhere with poor snow, presumably.
