How's the new (from Nov 2010) Reims bypass holding up?
Are there any issues apparent since it's opening?

And the traffic on the old road very quiet too - we came along that on Thursday morning having had a stop off for diesel at Carrefour at Tinquex, followed by a trip to Ikea for something that in the end was not in stock - good service though, not open till 10 a.m. but instead of making customers wait outside the doors were open and you could gather inside where they served free coffee and juice. Then joined the 'old' road again and sailed along with just the odd car or two - having said that once we rejoined the motorway the traffic on that was quiet too.

only to people who follow their satnavs blindly over cliffs.

The French Government for not sending me a personal letter informing me of the new Reims by-pass, which my car’s GPS thought was very funny and so it took me on a very strange tour of the area prior to getting me back on route – that’s half an hour of my life that I’ll never see again. |
Big improvement, clearly signposted. Trouble is, you still drive off, and back onto, péage. So at very busy times the gates will likely still cause some holdups.

Huge queues at the southern toll plaza last Sunday back onto the carriageway so Telepeage absolutely no advantage at all.
Unless you drove up the inside lane hard shoulder across the cross hatching and used the truck barrier.
There is also a new Lyon Northern By Pass link opening soon. The A432

You'll need to Register first of course.

The by-pass and the toll both were empty on Monday but I guess France had gone home by then, not having Monday as a bank holiday.
The by-pass saves quite a bit of time and you have to urn off to go through Riems, so it's easy find.

A useful point to remember. Telepeage can save you a few minutes here and there, but when everything's at a standstill, everyone is equal.
I know that autoroutes bypassing major urban areas in France are supposed to be toll-free (to dissuade people from clogging up the town just to save a few bob) but given there's a fast route through Reims it's a shame there are gates on the new road.
Bison Futé can tell you when the roads are going to be busy - France goes altogether, in solidarity, and solid jams, on holiday and home again. It's worth avoiding those days.

Sorry to reignite this thread but I just want to be sure as we're driving down next weekend and due to hit Reims about 0330hrs in the morning.
Is the new road called the A4 or A26, I'm used to turning off the A26 onto the A4 through Reims. I presume that at the end of the A26 (J16) is where it always was and the new road is the A4.
I'm very easily confused

jonathancarty, Do you remember where the road narrowed and went down and around to the road below? Well, now instead of narrowing you just drive straight on
and miss out Reims altogether.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

jonathancarty, just follow the signs south through the tolls towards Chalons etc avoiding the signs for Reims centre.

Anybody remember that photo of the two French road signs, one above the other. One, pointing to the right, read "toutes directions"; the other, pointing left, read "autres directions".
Seriously though - on the autoroutes the signs are pretty good. To miss them, you would have to be, oh let's see, knackered from a 4 am start and harrassed by a three-hour drive from Calais in an overloaded car full of fractious children

You know it makes sense.

I've driven around the country pretty widely over the last 20 years. They're good on the motorways generally I find. Not very good though around towns and cities and anywhere near Paris.

Great, thanks all.
sanman, if my cunning plan works the 4 fractious children should all be sleeping peacefully, my wife will me dozing next to me and I'll be halfway through an audio book. What could possibly go wrong.
Do NOT answer that.

We went through this without any issue. The Sat nav had fun attempting to route via none existant roads. Just ignored it and looked for the next destination.

On the return we stopped off overnight near Chalons, and despite leaving later than planned we were still in Calais with enough time to visit Majestic for a few cases of vin rouge. The benefits of the bypass are immeasurable.
