Poster: A snowHead

Hi oh knowledgeable snowheads ,
I am looking at buying som skis. Have skied for a few years now and am getting to grips with it pretty well. I am in between ESF groups 3 and 4 in terms of ability and feel it's time to buy some skis.
I love doing a bit of everything, piste carving, short tight turns, off piste whenever I get the opportnity and hadnyfirst taste of real powder last year and loved it!
I have my eye on a few pairs of Salomon X-Wing Tornados or fischer watea 78 or 84. Basically I want a ski that won't hamper me on piste but will allow me to have a bit of a play off piste.
I've been trawling the net andav found some interesting prices on some Elan models, few years old but new stock ie clearance.
They are Elan 888 ALU
Elan 777 ALU
Elan waveflex 8.
I've donea bit of searching and read some pretty good reviews but I thought I'd ask on here seeing as there i such a font of experience.
Any info most welcome.
Let it Snow!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

MJS, I haven't used Elans for a couple of seasons but had a blast on some Waveflex 12s and some Speedwaves too. Not knowing your ability, ambitions or dimensions it's impossible to be exact but I'd suggest looking at the 10s at least, so you have some ceiling room for development.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Love my speedwaves!!! They are 09/10 Speedwave 11s, the odd numbered models were runs Elan did for Intersport and seem to be a few different skis with the same number on in any given year! I guess they used up whatever they had as mine seem to be an 08/09 Speedwave 12, other than the model number printed on the ski they are identical to these http://www.ski-mag.com/equipment/skis/article/elan-speedwave-12-08-09?id=19437

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I came across a shop with loads of Elan skis in Notre Dame de Bellecombe this week. There were some called "St Moritz" in both girls and boys styles, which were over 1100 euros a pair.

I haven't any experience with the model the OP quotes. However, I am on Elan 78 Magfire Ti's (170's) and they are supposedly suitable for on and off piste use with about a 60:40 bias to on piste. I am skiing them on piste at the moment and having also used Elan WaveMagics (which are narrower) I can easily believe that you could use the Magfires for off-piste as they perform better on fresh powder and also in slushy conditions than the narrower WaveMagics. Elan Magfire 82 Ti's should perform even better off piste than the 78's, but at still supposedly OK for on piste - maybe the bias is reversed somewhat, but I haven't skied those. If the skis the OP has seen have similar characteristics to the Magfires (which should be easy enough to research on the net) then I would imagine they would suit the use he has in mind.

Hi MJS, try to send Fattes13 a pm - he's a rep for a different firm but is very knowledgeable on all sorts of brands/models including Elans - I know he has a pair of Magfires as well as at least a dozen others.
