Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski shopping advice/recommendations

Hi Folks,

After some help trying to buy a new pair of skis. Feeling particularly poor at the moment so looking to get as good a deal as possible.

Would like an All Mountain ski but would also go for a piste ski too, was thinking of something from last years stock or a ex demo with not to much use.

Any help as to shops that specialise in this kind of thing would be much apprecited.

Thanks in advance
Alan

I'd advise you try out skis next time you go skiing - rent a set and then change them every day - if you tell the shop you are looking to buy they will be more than happy to do this. Then, at the end of the week ask them if you can buy a set of ex rental, this way you should get them for a decent price.

People may offer advice on a specific ski that they like, and that's great, some skis are better than others, but the truth is unless someone (a) knows a heck of a lot about a lot of different skis and (b) knows how you ski then any advice will be pretty much personal opinion; the only way to really tell what's good for you is to try them out.

sah, Thanks for that, I might end up doing that yet.

Although I would feel better having skis before I go away in 2 weeks Very Happy

Well, if you really want to buy before try then my personal fave is the Atomic Nomad Renu. I rented a pair last season and they were superb across the board - crud, slush, ice, piste all great. Didn't find any powder but they would have been great in that too. I nearly bought the rental pair at the end of the week but my OH over ruled me, apparently I don't need another pair of skis.

For pure off piste I have a pair of Black Diamond Verdicts with touring bindings. Whilst they are fine on piste i can't recommend than as an all rounder, the atomics run rings round them on a posted surface for example.

Alan R, I'm selling my Mantra 177s at the moment, no bindings but they're in fabulous nick (hardly ever used)...
