I'm driving into geneva tomorrow/monday and really want to check out some good ski shops. I love a browse to see what's out there, and like to see a good range. Possibly pick up a new helmet.
Can anyone recommend any good gear places between Geneva and Val d'Isère?

Passage de Montagne apparently have a branch some in Geneva.
I use their Monthey shop (very much a ski-mountaineering shop).
Their new branch in Les Diablerets is much more general.

skieuse, If you're taking the scenic route, via Lac D'Annecy, there is a large skiwear and equipment shop about half way along the lake (on your right as you drive towards Val with the lake on your left. Near Lidls I think.) Very good prices and quite a selection, clothing especially. Any SnowHeads know what its called?

"shiny things" — just what I'm after. And wow, what a store!
Thanks for the recs, Albertville it is. I'm sure with 3 options (so far) I'll work out what it is I'm looking for. And I will be taking that scenic route...

it's much nicer down the eastern shore, and takes no longer. Lot less traffic and towards the north end, runs right along the lakeside.

no, the two alternatives I'm thinking of is straight down the "main" (but very busy and 50 kph practically all the way) road south from Annecy towards Ugine, via Duingt, as opposed to the quieter road the other side of the lake, via Talloires. No tolls on either.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

pam w, You're right. The eastern side is even more scenic. Either way is prefereable to the autoroute.

From a scenic point of view? I don't think I've ever gone the autoroute/non-Lac Annecy way, and every.single.time I think that there has to be a faster way!

You know it makes sense.

skieuse, According to Google maps, taking the autoroute is 7 minutes quicker but 45 KM further. I would always go via Lac D'Annecy as it :
1) Avoids the tolls
2) Avoids the sometimes horrendous queues/traffic jams at the toll booths near Chambery
3) Is more interesting & scenic

Lockkeeper, I'll always opt for a scenic route unless it adds significantly to time (which this doesn't).
My interest has now been piqued. I looked at ViaMichelin and got these options:
N90/A41 (via Chambery): 2hr41m/220km/€14.80
A5/A40 (via Bonneville & Mont Blanc tunnel): 3hr32m/230km/€40.50
Adding 'via' Ugine, I got my usual route: 2hr56m/175km/€6.10

skieuse, Sounds about right. The Bonneville/Mont Blanc Tunnel route will be summer only due to the Col De L'Iseran being shut.

I had a great time at Albertville, spending 2 hours in the enormous Casino before even hitting Aux Vieux Campeur. Scored a new helmet, a little plastic relief map of the Haute Savoie and a book on Val d Isère. The store is massive, and although no cheaper than anywhere else, the range is impressive.
I made an unscheduled stop at the Sport 2000 in Bourg and was surprised by the great end of line sale they were having — 40% off! It was mostly Spyder (which I didn't realise was so expensive). I found a long, down coat by Kjus which was reduced from €499 to €300. I'm still thinking about it, as although it's quite pricey, it's an investment piece that will last for many winters. Hmmm....
On a side note, I also visited the Taxidermy museum in Séez. What a hoot! If you like kitsch touristy tat, visit the shop. If you have €5.50 and half an hour to spare, the museum itself is... phenomenal.
Finally, hit an enormous (& new) traffic bottleneck at the Siaix tunnel which I feel I should warn the snowheads about. Which is the best thread for this sort of thing?

i almost always go through Annecy too, even if i I have a company toll card. but if you hit it at the wrong time it too can also be nightmare, especially if there are road works.
now, the Roc 'ard Sud (i forget the proper spelling), thats true road jams Grenoble style!
