Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chalets

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi peeps,

I am looking for a cheap chalet (6 people), but I have one major problem. My partner is a teacher and the only time she can go is her half term (Feb 10 - 19).

As much as I love lashing cash unnecessarily, I would sooner avoid the half term price hike. Is there anywhere you can suggest for cheaper chalets, or am I just going to have to ditch her! Smile

Thanx

Welcome to snowHeads dominicfiend, the easy answer is to ditch her, however assuming that you don't wish to do so, consider booking privately direct with a chalet, the only problem with this is that they may already be booked, search out suitable resorts and contact their tourist offices directly, they should be able to provide you with a list of suitable accomodation, some will even help you book, just leaving you with the problem of getting to the resort, if any of the 6 have an MPV the Eurotunnel is probably the best option

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Well, perhaps not. My girlfriend is also a teacher, so you have my sympathies about half-term prices. One of the contributers on snowHeads - PG - has a 3-bedroom apartment in Bourg St Maurice which might be suitable if you fancy self-catering. Easy access to Les Arcs and a short drive to other great resorts such as Tignes, Val d'Isere, La Rosiere, etc. Not sure how much PG charges for half-term, but it might be cheaper than booking a package holiday. PG's details can be found at http://bsm.alpesprovence.net/index.htm

Have u considered going in the Easter holidays instead.
We take our kids once a year and, trying to be well-behaved parents, stick to the holidays if we can. However, we are not happy to pay 2-3 times as much in order to queue for 2-3 times as long by going at half term.
If u pick a fairly high resort the snow is still excellent at Easter - we've taken the Kids to Tignes a few times and Val Thorens this year and always had great snow.

Or ditch her Wink

oh and welcome to snowHeads btw. snowHead

dominicfiend,

Welcome to snowHead

Ditch her! They are not normally so harsh Sad

Don't ditch her- tell her to ditch the job and get a proper one that doesn't involve school terms....simple really! Very Happy

We always go in school holidays at the moment, teenage kids, but we can do it at a reasonable cost with a bit of searching. Booking accomodation direct is usually cheaper (no supplements for under-occupancy for example, we drive if flights are too expensive, and try to book the flights a soon as they come out (accommodation is then booked at a later date). We don't always go at half-term, sometimes preferring New Year and Easter.
THis Easter we went to Whistler for about £1500 less than the equivalent holiday from a tour operator.

Thanx for the warm welcome and all the feedback. Although I usually plump for the easiest option, I'm not gonna ditch her just yet. Easter it is...
