A renowned malaria specialist punched a 14-year-old girl between 2 and 4 times last Friday after she accidently skied into his 4-year-old son. The incident, at Colorado's Beaver Creek resort, occurred when the girl swerved to avoid another skier. The ski instructor who pulled the man off the girl told deputies that he punched her "at least 4 times, using a closed fist,"...Two other witnesses said they observed the man yell at the girl before landing 2 or 3 punches. The scientist has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse. He told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, while the girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center.

Obviously we don't know the full circumstances here. And I can't condone an adult assaulting a child. But a lot of teenagers (and yes i'm generalising here) do ski or ride without control, or regard for anyone but themselves. But they are teenagers and that's how they are in every aspect of life (I have 2) so best get used to it.
On the other side of the coin I despair when i see adults leading children as young as three or four down our local black run in a 2mph snowplough. We all know the downhill rule but is it fair to be confronted by this on a steep section?
As I say we will never know what really caused this.
Anyway 4 sleeps to go before snow!

Yes, if you can't stop in the space you can see in front of you, you're going too fast, or you're not in control. They have as much right to be on the slope as you do. I'd rather have the kid at 2mph snowploughing down it than someone hammering down it at 60mph without a clue what is over the next ridge. It could be me, lying in the snow, injured...

When I was doing seasons, one of the lifties was Scottish and was out skiing with his 4yo daughter on a mellow blue. An out of control adult British skier crashed into his daughter and unsurprisingly, the liftie went beserk. The skier, realising that the liftie was Scottish said, "Sorry mate, I thought she was French". The liftie, as his wife and the mother of the child was french, took offence to this, laid one on the skier, told him what he thought of him, picked up his daughter and skied off.
The skier then headed straight to the lift pass office and demanded to see ther manager. The manager duely came out and listened to the skier who complained he'd been assaulted by a liftie on the slopes. The manager asked to see the skier's lift pass and when it was produced took it out of his hand, told the skier he'd heard what had happened, though he was a t**t who was not safe to be skiing around and could f**k off back down the mountain.

Monium, i agree, its not so much a question of speed as having one's options for turning, etc, reduced by an unpredictable or stationary skier who is totally out of their ability zone as it were. I get as mad as anyone seeing people slicing through the nursery slopes at 40 mph.
I guess my point is, as responsible skiers we all buy into the idea that the downhill skier has priority, but shoudn't that downhill skier also recognize that with rights come responsibilities, prime amongst which is not to venture onto slopes you are completely unable to handle (and not to take your kids on them either).
I realise everyone has to learn and you have to start somewhere. I myself still find some blacks are a challenge. I just think if you are at the snowplough stage, on a black run you are a danger to others probably as much as to yourself. Just my view

It would actually be quite nice if snowNews could be kept clear of stories of death, disaster and random violence for a day or two, bringing out, as they inevitably do, the worst in snowHeads.

Perhaps they were using amateur rules...
"A point is awarded for a scoring hit on the opponent's head (side or front) or body (above the belt)"

I'm surprised - and a little disappointed - that no one has raised the issue of wheather the teen was wearing a helmet...
It's another compelling reason to do so, especially for those of us who like to open the taps on blue runs and so inevitably risk taking a couple of right handers from reknowned experts in tropical diseases after having run over their bairns. Gum sheild too for me this year - these teeth cost a chuffing fortune

I haven't logged on for a while and I'm shocked that some Snowheads seem to think it's funny or ok to punch a child (yes a 14 year old is still a child) whatever the circumstances.... think these guys need a reality check.

Cipria, I'm inclined to agree with you. From the reports it seems to me that the girl may simply have tried to avoid a fallen skier, apparently she was in a class and the person in front fell, the father and son were by the sound of it too close to the class and she bumped into the little boy knocking him over, at that point the child's father instead of checking on his kid decided to completely loose the plot and beat up a young girl, the fact that an instructor had to pull him off speaks volumes.
We've all seen idiotic skiers and some of us have no doubt been in collisions with a few (I know I have) but I've never felt the need to beat them up, though I have yelled at them, weather the girl was in the wrong or not there was absolutely no justification in the actions of the father. Indeed from the reports I've read there's nothing to indicate that the girl was out of control or going to fast.
