Hi,
Was wondering if anyone could possibly advise me on the following. I'm trying to arrange a group skiing holiday for this 27th December. There will be a group of approx. 6 (but maybe more/less). Want to go to a decent enough resort with good snow record/skiiable domain + a bit of nightlife. However all the group are single and would very much like their own rooms!. Tried the various operators and this seems like an impossible task to arrange. Was therefore considering driving over to somewhere in France and booking into a hotel which won't sting too much for sole occupancy. What do you think my chances are and more importantly do you have any recommendations? Cheers
Rgds

Type23, at that time of year, you are very unlikely to get away without having to pay a single supplement for sole use of a double room.
Mark Warner have a few chalet hotels with single rooms. The Moris springs to mind, but it is a bit of an accquired taste.

That week is the French no. 1 skiing week and therefore the MOST expensive in the entire season and as Kramer, says, you're going to be paying single supplements if you can't find anywhere with enough single rooms to accommodate you all(which seems unlikely). HAve you thought about self catering and not filling up all the rooms (it will be expensive though)? Have a look at the Hotel Golf in Courchevel 1650 - right on the front de neige, so couldn't be more convenient, and it has a variety of self catering units and hotel rooms so you might be able to build up something flexible there. Good luck!

Any room that doesn't charge a single supplement at New Year is likely to be not much bigger than a small cupboard, especially if you choose a resort which is high enough for a good snow record this early in the season. I've not come across any places which have more than one or two single rooms, certainly not as many as six.
Is everybody shy, or are they all hoping to pull?

Sounds like they all want to get laid to me!! Nowt wrong with that, if you are single.
Snowsure resort, with promiscuous clientele? Try Solden. Les 2Alpes?
There is a TO called "Solos" (I think) that specialise in singles. It's gonna cost you tho, no doubt about that.

Type23 - single rooms, rather than single-occupancy twin rooms, are what you need. Your best bet is to run this demand past the tourist offices of large resorts that appeal to you. They will be able to tell you in an instant which hotels in those resorts can offer single rooms.
I've just returned from Zermatt, which has a very large number of hotels in total (over 100). They publish an extensive accommodation guide, both in print and on the website - see www.zermatt.ch . Many of the hotels have single rooms, which tend to be priced at little more than half the cost of a twin room. You might have to split into two groups in nearby hotels, but I'm sure you could be sorted at reasonable cost (depending on which star rating of hotel you want).

the ice perv, "solos" still charge you extra for single occupancy of a double room.

Type23, the more snow sure resorts will probably already have many of their rooms booked for that week, it's probably the most expensive week of the year to go skiing because of the New Years Eve celebrations that will fall in it. David Goldsmith, probably has the best suggestion so far

Type23, no, the French don't go for B&B, Switzerland and Austria do though. It's not the number one week or whatever was suggested above, most people here prefer to stay at home with family. Over new year is actually the busier week. We used to go to Lech for Xmass each year when we lived in Germany and we never booked before Dec.

Type23, the Eldorada in Belle Plagne used to do single rooms with no supplement, you shared a bathroom though with the adjacent single. I think the hotel has been taken over though, and the rooms no longer exist.

ise, um 1 week starting 27th of December will include 1st of Jan unless Switzerland has more days in December than the rest of the world, New year falls on a weekend this year as does Christmas which will mess things up again for many people

Type23 the nearest Travelodge/Ibis that I know of is in Albertville. Good value hotels can be found in the Logis de France guide, however, in high season, in a resort, I don't know of any hotel that doesn't insist on a minimum 7 day booking, you can certainly find B & B rates but pension or demi-pension is usually better value. If you go to our website www.tracksvacations.com you'll find a link to the La Rosiere Tourist Office, I can recommend Le Relais de St Bernard and there's the Belevdere at a pinch, only because it's a little way out of the village but it does have it's own shuttle bus service. Good luck but you may have left it too late.

Type23,
Won't your mates share a twin bedded room?
Or go self catering and rent an appartment with one more room than you need in case any one gets lucky! Or find a catered chalet that has an odd single/ double room and pay the under occupancy supplement.
Many good Chalet operators include a floor plan and even photo's of each room.

Type23, Do you have to go on the 27th - because, especially in France, that will be when everyone else wants to go. It will be the most expensive week !
If you are all single blokes, go in term time.... much cheaper.

ski, Not just France, New Years is celebrated all over Europe far more than Christmas as such it tends to be the most expensive and most booked week of the year, if Type23, can arrange it 1 month later it is far more likely that he will find cheaper accomodation and more of it, also the chances are that snow conditions will be much better, but I rather suspect that Type23, might be at Uni or College and won't be able to change the dates

D G Orf, In that case, Type23, - go at Easter

D G Orf, if he's a student and all his friends are students, will anyone really notice if they all have a week off?
|

If they're students, then they should be prepared to share rooms to get a cheaper deal.....when I was a student, we did things like stay in camping barns/scout huts/cram more people in hotel rooms...

Having read another of his posts I suspect I might have been wrong about his age/being at uni etc but perhaps he has another reason
|
|
|
|
|
|
Maybe he's a teacher or some of his friends are? I didn;t think he's be a student, not when they all want to pay for single rooms. I think they should find a large apartment, and make their own travel arrangements, cheaper at peak times too.

Type23, you'll find Solos skiing holidays are not particularly cheap but if your mates insist on privacy or room to manoeuvre they might suit. But most of their skiing hols are to some pretty off-beat resorts.
If you are tied to 27th Dec they have Monte Bondone in Italy at £875 p.p. 7 nights

Type23, We have several hotels which do B & B here in LDA. I don't know whether they have single rooms though. Try Les Lutins, Le Cote Brun, Le Chamois, La Belle Etoile via the tourist office website www.les2alpes.com. I also know for sure that the Hotel Mercure (yes - that chain) do B & B, although they're not in the town centre but in the "Village" area (now known as Les 2 Alpes 1800).
I would expect that week to be very expensive thuugh, but good luck.
