Poster: A snowHead

Should I.....
1 Go it alone again with a Tour Operator?
2 See if a group has a gap for one going?
3 Plan a trip myself for one?
Any ideas for a European trip would be great. I dont fancy driving but the thought of going by train (by day) is appealing as it would be something different.
Quite happy meeting people to ski with while away or just skiing alone. Happy with own space I suppose. Like to relax and enjoy the tranquility when not blazing a trail down the slopes, maybe even have a beer before an early night.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I think if travelling by yourself, it makes more sense to do the TO thing. I've certainly never been able to better the cost by adding up the individual components. Plus there's always the bonus of fellow TO people to ski with, if you feel like it, and the security of having everything sorted for you and someone on hand should you need them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Arctic Fox, if I were doing a week's holiday on my own, I'd book onto a specialist ski course. In fact, I did exactly that, some years ago, when my OH was hors de combat with a bad knee. Had a good time and learnt a lot.
I enjoy skiing on my own for a day, but wouldn't enjoy it much for a week, I think.
another possibility, if you're young, is to go with UCPA - there are quite a few recent threads about them. If you're an advanced skier you'd probably enjoy one of their off-piste weeks. Action-Outdoors organise trips from the UK but you can just book direct with UCPA and organise your own travel.

Arctic Fox,
UCPA in Flaine 5th March - as Pam W says, try booking it through Action Outdoors. I've booked full-time instruction. Flights from Bristol - Geneva £125, use AO's coach transfer to resort, £58.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I heartily encourage you to pursue the train option - I find it by far the most civilised way to travel to resort.
People often make the mistake of thinking the only resorts accessible by train are those in the Tarentaise surrounding Moutier and Bourg Saint Maurice stations. But, there are sleeper trains to Briancon for the Southern alps or Munich for access to Garmisch and much of Austria (also trains into Austria of course), even to Verona in Italy. And of course Switzerland has a very effective rail service with many top resorts having their own railway stations.
We worked out, door to door from Central London to Wengen, there was barely an hour in it between flying and taking the train and which was quicker depended on things like, how long you ended up waiting for you bags in the airport.
As far a s where to go? There's a snowHeads bash in March but it's only really good for you if you're into trying/developing/enjoying off-piste, although there will be one or two there who aren't.

Arctic Fox, I would certainly recommend joining or starting a group. I've done it many times and always found the common bond of skiing makes sharing with strangers great fun. Although I suppose you do have to be prepared to be tolerent and take ear plugs just in case you get a snorer. As well as the solo skiers section here, Neilson have a very good solo skiers forum on their website for making up groups.
As for the train, I'd much rather fly from Bournemouth.

Artic Fox, if you are still looking for a week in March, we have a group of 9 (so far), going to La Plagne w/c 19th March - chalet booked, space for a few more - there's a thread elsewhere - "Re: Skiing week of 19 March 2011"
