i dont get why SH's to expect a snowdome to not take any bookings for race training or freestyle |
I'd guess its down to being spoilt early on where HH showed good discipline at not becoming the same sort of junkshow as MK with rails and kickers left all over the slope (but unusuable).
Plus Hemel could improve transparency about slope closures - how hard is it to update the website for known bookings - no sign of the SASA closures on here yet they are evidently regularly recurring
"Please be aware that sometimes the slope or part of it, is unavailable due to an event or race club training.
Regular sessions are as follows:
Monday 6pm-8pm
Main Slope closed for Race Club training. The training slope will be open for pre-booked lessons.
Sunday 6pm - 8pm
One third of the main slope will be closed for Race Club Training. Please be aware that there may also be adult race club members skiing on the remainder of the slope."

fatbob, yeah definitely, last december the place was virtually empty for the december gig with SHs so perhaps everyones expectation is for clear slope at all times. A webcam or a list of partial closures would be useful.. I wonder if say alton towers or legoland do something similar when they have big groups in or attractions not working and queues may be bigger than normal ... On the rails and jumps, not sure it is a junk show but it is a bit of a drag when they are unusable and taking up space, but i guess they have to be set up in advance for clinics but cordoned off if not supervised or there would be a few accidents and then SH's would be abuzzing with threads like we had a while back when everyone was complaining about dangerous furniture at MK being exposed and not fenced off..

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm not sure the theme park analogy is a great one - if that's the standards of customer satisfaction and repeat visits the Snow Centre is aspiring to they might as well bring on the top to bottom sledging hill now and be done with the troublesome skiers at weekends and holidays.

skimottaret, made a guess that SASA might get 20 skiers for their race session. I've seen many an Events thread when SH's have taken that many to HH. I wonder why they don't offer SH's exclusive use of half the slope when we reach a certain number of users or are we just classed as 2nd class citizens in comparison to a racing group. Unless I am very much mistaken SH's has been quite loyal to HH and I would have thought that they would appreciate the good press they often get here as well as the regular income and loyalty even during the quieter summer months, yet groups like the SASA seem to get specialist 'exclusive' treatment when SH's don't. I wonder how much they are paying for their somewhat more 'exclusive' use and whether it is worth SH's enquiring what it would cost if we reached certain numbers so that we got similar exclusive use and half of the slope roped off from non-SH skiers?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Megamum, Have snowHeads ever asked to rent a lane? it's not special treatment; a club rents a lane so they get exclusive use. No reason why snowHeads couldn;t do the same I guess but then the cost would have to be borne by those that sign up, no matter how few.

Megamum, as I understand it clubs like SASA pay an additional fee to reserve a training lane, in addition to paying for individual skiers who do their race training. I'm sure that Hemel would be only too pleased if snowHeads wanted to reserve some or all of the slope (I did enquire about this when I arranged the initial snowHeads event last year and the cost per head was significant even with the numbers we had attending that event).
You're right to point out that snowHeads have attended monthly events with some loyalty since this all kicked off last June. It's probably fair to point out that Hemel have, in return, offered amazingly good value slope passes (which I believe are significantly cheaper than the Snow Centre itself sells to people who want to ski for a few hours on a Saturday night).

rob@rar, That's useful information to consider - thanks. I did wonder if they were paying a premium for the courtesy hence asking. I wonder how many SH's would want to and how much they would be prepared to pay for exclusive use of part of the slope? Yes, I also remember reading now about those cheap ski passes which were a nice touch for anyone with the time and cash to ski regularly and within regular striking distance of the slope.

Megamum, it's not a courtesy, it's a commercial arrangement

I was referring to how much it costs to ski on the snowHeads deal on the monthly Saturday night events (supersnowHeads pay £25 for a five hour pass, compared to £56 which is what members of the public pay for a four hour pass at peak times). When I negotiated that price it was better than I dare hope, and Hemel has honoured that price ever since, despite the number of people attending each month being nowhere near what it was at the launch event.

Megamum, The supersnowHeads price of £25 to ski from 5pm until 9pm still works out a lot cheaper than what a Snow Centre member would pay for the same amount of time and with the 30% membership discount.

Ruby, I'm not saying they shouldn't have an interest in skiing for free, and indeed that would be the attraction, but they are being paid, whether in cash or in kind, to discharge thier duties and presumably they agreed with the duties of a snow patroller by virtue of accepting the job. If those duties are not being discharged to the required standard they should be dismissed then there'd be no free skiing at all. |
You know, I'd be happy to help out when I can as slope patrol during the busy season. I'd even do it voluntarily. I'm not short of enthusiasm (as some are already too aware ). I don't suppose anyone knows who I should get in touch with @ Hemel to see if such an arrangement would be possible?

Hemel may not be perfect but it`s a d*mn sight better than MK. I trudged up to MK today: the snow was rotten, the equipment appalling and the staff were - what could charitably be described as - `indifferent`. On top of all that they insisted on running only one drag notwithstanding the fact that the queue was long and slow.
