Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Thorens Review

Ironically, the least likely resort to get rainfall during the season is the highest one.
That'll be VT if you're staying in Europe.

Blewyn, you'll like this.... I just proposed Le Gitan for dinner to the organiser of our upcoming trip to Zermatt. She Told me they boycott it on principle having been treated very "rudely" at the Darioli!!!

And having just looked on tripAdvisor seems they're not the only ones!

Val Thorens plays that trick beloved of plain girls at parties - stand next to the real MUNTER and you'll look good in comparison.

Blewyn - next time start in Les Menuires, then VT will come as a blessed relief

Me too. There was one piste running down to Les Menuires where I would have been better off in a canoe than on skis.

Have to say, this has been one of the most amusing reads in a long time. I'm going to Zermatt this Feb , and Val Thorens has been suggested for next year! Will make my mind up about Zermatt and swiss service for sure. My experience so far (first time skiing in Switzerland), for service is Austria first, Italy second (very friendly but a bit lacksadasical), France 3rd. And France was mostly fine. However do agree with Blewyn, that compared to Austria the attitude is more of they are doing you a favour in France. Also if you are paying they should give good service, and if not no tip, - simple.

Is there a snowheads annual award for best thread? Thread of the year?

twoodwar, the French will not expect a tip . A 15% service charge is included in all restaurants and most bars (French law). The only exception is when you stand at the bar, which is why drinks served to you on a terrace or table are often more expensive. It would then be OK to put your small change on the bar.

Hell Bells cheers, but been going to France since 1968 myself. Appreciate the comments, but the essence was wherever you have the opportunity to withhold for bad service - do so.

Cutting off their noses to spite their faces. The german Swiss are generally brusque but polite and efficient. They're not effusive and ass-kissing but you normally get served fast and well.

Don't deny yourself the double-served lamb and dauphinoise at Le Gitan because somebody took the hump at some other place.....

Also, I highly recommend the helicopter trip from Zermatt, around the Matterhorn landing on Monte Rosa, first thing in the morning. Awesome doesn't even begin to describe it - check out my video here

Gets you straight up to the top without any queues 1st thing in the morning too. At Monte Rosa Hutte I highly recommend the italian sausages with polenta......then ski down the Italian side and have hot choc (they make it with cornflour...)

Not quite your average Crystal excursion sold at the welcome night but sounds great!

Can't remember how much it was - but it wasn't horrendous - maybe a hundred quid each ? Well worth the money for a one-off. You get a great view of all the crevasses in the glacier as you skim over them on your way up the valley. Make sure you ask for the once-around-the-Matterhorn then Monte Rosa dropoff. You don't half feel a million dollars getting out at the top ! Happy

No, they steadfastly refuse to accept your money.....

Whoa,

VT expensive? Your kidding right? Booze.....get yourself to dicks tea bar (1 euro a beer/jager/wine/whatever at happy hour). Food isn't cheap, but then it never is in any ski resort. And as for looks, the resort never pretends to be postcard pretty. I assumed it would be ugly when I went, but I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of wooden apartments and chalets. Pistes are varied and fun to ski, but can be icy due to the altitude and exposure to the wind. Overall, I'd say VT is a crackin resort with lots to offer....you just have to hunt a bit for bargains.

it's never cheap, but there are plenty cheaper than VT - and without going too far, either.
