Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Decent broadband in Tignes?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all,

I'm going to Tignes for a week (end of November), but there's a meeting one evening (in the USA), which I would dearly like to attend via video conference. I would love to be able to get a decent net connection for a few hours, and am wondering whom to approach to try to set it up. I know I could just head for the Alpaka, but I'ld be happier (and willing to pay a bit) if I knew I would get some dedicated bandwidth so that all the folk downloading massive satellite images of weather fronts won't kick me off.

I guess my questions are:
- Is a 3G card worth looking at -- will it give me any more of a guarantee of bandwidth? What's coverage like in Tignes?
- Are any of the hotels particularly well connected? Especially if they're not yet fully open, so less competition for the bandwidth.
- Is there likely to be any benefit in heading down to Bourg for the evening?

And yes, I know, I should just kick back and relax, but it's a big deal to attend this thing -- I can relax the rest of the week.

Thanks,

A.

I used a 3G dongle (Vodafone) in Tignes last year and it gave me enough bandwidth for my web surfing, email and the like as well as allowing Bogus junior to piggyback off me (Oh the joys of Macs!) for YouTube, Facebook and endless other diversions. We were in Val Claret but I believe coverage is pretty good in Le Lac too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ta Bogus, will try to get hold of cheap 3G somewhere.

Even landline broadband speeds are not great up in Tarentaise - here in Sainte Foy we only get 1-2 whatever-the-speed-that's-usually-at-least-20 is measured in. I believe Val and Tignes (even further up the valley) are the same. Bourg might be better, not sure.

That said, it's no problem for us to make video calls via Skype.
