Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val d'Isere to create 5 freeride areas?

This Planetski article mentions in passing that Val d'Isere is creating five 'free-ride' zones this season (unpatrolled off-piste, buy avalanche secured). Anyone know any more about this? Be great to see more Euro resorts following this approach.

rob@rar, So they are starting to realize they need to keep people safe as well, not just tell everyone to pay for a guide. I am not sure the guides/instructors will be happy about this. Great news in one way, BUT, I hope they do not spoil the best off piste areas by making it possible for everyone to go there without the gear. What it might be is that they will convert hard to piste Black runs into 'nature ride' zones. That would be a great move I think. They did this in Les Arcs a few seasons ago but it does mean the areas are closed to often as the resort will be responsible for safety. Not being patrolled, does not mean not being rescued. It just means if there is an accident, you have to call them out to help you. They have had this system in Tignes for at least 4 years now. Seems to work really well.

Arno, Laughing Probably right. Means the other areas will last for 10 rather than 5...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Tignes have had their "SPOT" freeride zone for a few years now. There are man made features etc, but within a day or so of a storm it's mainly a bump run.

It does mean that some other areas will remain slightly less tracked though.
