Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best mid price goggles for low light

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Your opinions on goggles, ski, not beer! A lot of pricing seems to be based on image, as I have experience of a certain google manufacturer who specialises in sunglasses that never last long, but are quite expensive. It also seems to me that low light situations are when one really needs googles that perform; does one get what one pays for? Thanks.

cstreat, what counts as "mid-priced" to you?

I don`t mind paying for gear that works, but I was hoping to cut through some of the image bs. Given £ 20 rock bottom, £ 150 high; £50 to £80 seems good to me. Call me a tight fist, but I can use a £85 pair of polarised Ray Bans for most skiing, sailing, cycling, driving and travelling, and they generally last a few years. Oakley`s on the other hand seem to be made of tissue paper; so you don`t always get what you pay for. The two pairs of budget goggles that I have had were generally poor fitting, misted up a bit, and the seal fell apart; if I spend £80, will they be 4 x better fitting and longer lasting? Are some manufacturers better than others? Hard times ahead!!

Can't comment on their goggles, but my Oakley sunglasses are rugged and have lasted a long time. Turning to goggles, if you wear a helmet from time to time, make sure the goggles will fit comfortably with it. FWIW, I have used either Bolle or Scott goggles - both makes seem equally good.

cstreat, Bolle, with the modulator lens (lightens and darkens a little to adapt to the light conditions) run from about £60-£82 depending on the style and (if appropriate) they make a really nice ladies google called the simmer with an arora lens which looks great and fits well on the several people we have given it to try on

Depends on whether you wear a helmet and what fits - I do wear a Helmet ( A Smith) and find the Smith Goggles far and away the best fit - mine were £60 I thibk they were Fusions

Googles, with yellow lens i've found to work best in low/poor light. Over the years I've tries 'em aLL, Oakley, Scott, Addidas, Uvex, Cebe, I can honestly say that I've not really found any better than another, just make sure they are comforatble. Prices wise proberly 80€ max.
Glasses, pretty well the same applies, but try to ensure you get a good fit so that you avoid cold air streaming in via the nose and sides across your eyes. I did have a bad experiance with a well known very expensive pair that i accidently stood on in Ski boots, resulting in 2 expensive monicles. Infact proberly the best sun glasses I had were a pair of yellow tint Scott glasses that I brough in Zermatt, cost about £20 i think, and lasted years.

I've got a pair of Sundown goggles, bought from Blues in Glasgow, the worst website ever so you cant see the product.
But here is the link from Sundown
http://www.sundownsports.co.uk/GogglesStorm.htm

I've used them in bright sunshine and darkening evenings and misty days on Glencoe. For only £35 they are an absolute bargain.

Cheers

Bolle Modulators, I wear Oakleys for bright conditions and my modulators for dull. The red ones really are very good in flat light and dull overcast

Another one for Oakley, however you can find A-frames for under 50 quid. I'm posting this on my phone so can't look it up but google Oakley store uk. There is a factory outlet somewhere on the web that sells past seasons stuff at knock down prices!

It's oakley-vault.co.uk but just looked and they still geared up for the summer stuff, they do goggles though so if you have time wait a bit and keep checking back!

Smiths do it for me - comfort, peripheral view, fogging (or lack) and they work. £45 about 6 years ago - no idea now, they're still going strong.

I used to have problems with various goggles (steaming up, not great vision) until I bought my current pair of Adidas Yodai; I love them and think they're brilliant. They have inter-changeable lenses so you can put dark ones in for sunny days, I use yellow lenses for low light which work great. They're admittedly not cheap (I think currently around £95), but to think of the bad times I went through before I found these, well the cost was well worth it.

Many thanks for the great advice, and sorry if I offended Oakley owners!

cstreat, I bought a pair of Addidas Yodai goggles and they are brilliant. Very comfortable and never steam up. I was considering getting a second pair here, http://www.ellis-brigham.com/cgi-bin/psProdSrch.cgi?formCategory=Goggles&formBrand=Adidas&srchType=special , as they are only £69, reduced from £115.

I got mine in store from my local Snow and Rock. Think you can also order them from them, just give them a call. Not cheap, £35, but I used to have orange ones which my mate broke (never lend decent kit to friends!) and I actually find the yellow ones much better.

Yer, there's quite a few coming back with British troops from Afghanistan where they're standard issue.

Can stop a shotgun blast from 35 feet. As used by military and law enforcement agencies across the world:

I s'pose it depends if you want bling or something that is comfortable, practically unbreakable and does the job very well.

Haha altis, good to know my eyes will be fine whilst the rest of my head is blown to bits. I have no idea of their performance. My comment was wholey based on the fact that they will make you look like a spaz. But hey, I know this forum is very function before fashion oriented so go for it.

altis just to let you know im a soldier and ive used the goggles, although on a slightly dustier and warmer climate wink. Id say they were good, especially for issued kit! but like i said that was in hot and dusty conditions although it was sticking out the top of a moving vehicle at about 20-40 mph so im sure they'd be fine. The lenses are really quick and easy to change although the strap wouldnt be the best around the back of your head with a hat as theres no rubber but would be ok with a lid.

The biggest problem i think you'd have is field of vision, they're much more like swimming goggles rather than full field of view....but for £15 might be worth a shot. ohhh and obv if you're flying through the trees theres not much thats gunna go through them wink
