Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How to get Eurosport?

Is there any way I can add just Eurosport to my Freesat HD? I don't want a Sky subscription and I don't like watching online but it looks to me like Europsport is only available in the UK via those 2 options? (Apart from sticking up a big dish and watching Eurosport Bulgaria or whatever...)

That is, of course, if Eurosport is the only place to see Alpine racing before about February when Ski sunday starts on the beeb. I assume C4 aren't going back to it?

I'm not skiing till January so I've got to at least find a way to watch it till then! Sad

Swiss Toby, You can get Eurosport 'free to air' on old analogue boxes but I understand that one of the Humax Freesat boxes supports both formats. I'm hoping motoGP returns to Eurosport soon !

altis, so can you get that on a normal freesat box ? If I read it correctly the 'French' one is not encrypted and has an English audio ?

Yes you can BUT:

None of the satellites listed for Eurosport are at 28.2E - which is where the Freesat ones are. As you may know, there are many satellites arranged in an arc across the sky:

Your dish only points to one of these so you'll need to either:
1) motorise the dish so that it can turn to follow the arc
2) get a second LNB, offset bracket and Diseqc switch
3) get a second dish and LNB and Diseqc switch

Then you'll need to be able to tune into Eurosport so you'll have to manually input the channel details into the configuration menu of the STB. You'll also need to configure the Diseqc output (not sure all Freesat boxes have this) to control the switch or motor. With patience, this can be done but you'll need to be fairly practical if you want to go the motorised route.

Possibly an easier solution is to buy a complete FTA (Free To Air) satellite kit (Lidl have them from time to time) and just point the second dish at Hotbird 13E. Quite a number of free channels are available there:

http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=13E&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear

My own interest is radio from around the world. I have motorised a cheap Lidl dish and configured the FTA receiver to be just a radio. I can receive nearly 4000 radio channels from satellites at:
53E, 45E, 42E, 39E, 36E, 33E, 28E, 23E, 19E, 16E, 13E, 10E, 07E, 05E, 01W, 05W, 08W, 11W, 12W, 15W, 22W, 30W

altis, Thanks, good to know it's possible although it sounds a little beyond my technical skills. Maybe I'll see if I can find a local satellite tech to sort it out for me. Smile

Yep, there's bound to be plenty of installers who can put in a simple FTA (Free To Air / Unencrypted / Clear) system pointing at Hotbird for you relatively cheaply. This will mean two of everything up until you get to your TV. Hopefully, this will have multiple inputs so you can switch between boxes.

Alternatively, get yourself over to:
http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/installer-wanted/
and see if anyone nearby is able to help you out.

But be aware that, as soon as you step outside the world of Freesat or Sky, the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) that you get will be very primitive. If you just want one or two 'odd' channels then it's probably best to manually patch them into a single Freesat box. If you want quite a few then I'd keep separate receivers and switch between the two using the TV. If you want thousands of channels then I'd abandon Freesat and the EPG!

altis, Cheers, that's interesting. I get most of my channels via a freeview aerial decoder - so in theory I could point my existing old (sky) dish at Hotbird and the job should be a good one ?

david@mediacopy, it should work but, before you start, make sure there is a way in the channels menu to manually input the frequency etc. Without the Freesat EPG, the box will not know how to tune into any channels. If you're lucky there will be some sort of scan function like there is on all FTA boxes.

To reposition the dish you'll probably need a satellite finder - couple of quid off ebay or Lidl when they're in season. This plugs into the cable between the LNB and the receiver and squarks when it sees a signal. Also, it can be handy if you can arrange to see the screen of the TV and watch the signal strength meter there. You'll want to move the dish about 5 degrees to the right and up just a touch. I'd mark everything up before you start so I could put it back again!

altis, I need to pick up a new box, so I'll make sure I get one that allows a manual setting. Thanks for your help, I thought Eurosport was a gone for good ! Happy

In that case just get a cheap FTA one. Don't bother with Freesat as it's not really designed to work with other satellites. BTW, another source of cheap FTA kits is B&Q.

rather than go the 'hardware' route why not go the 'software' route.

id rather plug my pc into m tv and stream from the internet to the TV. if you're bothered get a media centre pc which has Tv tuner as you dont have sky or a subscription. use the media box for your tv and when you want to watch eurosport simply open a browser to your stream then fullscreen it?

None in English I'm afraid but that's not necessarily a bad thing given the quality of some sports commentaries! Laughing

roga, Cheers - Do you happen to know if the BBC\ITV channels will play on oversea's IPs ?
ski holidays

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
^ I don't think BBC iPlayer will but you could try a proxy site that'll mask your IP then run the iPlayer through that. I guess it'd be the same for the ITV programmes too but as with the BBC a proxy should fix the problem. If ITV 1 won't play you could always try STV (Scottish ITV) which is the sole remaining independent ITV channel and runs it's own stream via it's website which shows most ITV1 programmes.

For all Freeview channels (including the BBC & ITV ones) you can view online via the TV Catchup website, you'll have to sign up for an account but it's free, website here: http://www.tvcatchup.com

Not sure if TV Catchup blocks IPs but as above if it does you can try running it via a proxy.

Hope that helps Very Happy
