Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Shell Trousers

I have been looking for new gear for this coming season and whilst I have previously worn a shell jacket with a fleece underneath, I have never had shell trousers.

What do you wear under shell trousers other than skins which I wear under my insulated ones?

Just thermal base layers, merino out of preference, but I have never been cold in shell trousers, but have been in padded ones. There is the added advantage of unpadded legs for those April days. My Tog24 ones are 6 or 7 years old now and apart from some colour fade are still in fine nick.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

But I needed my base layer under the insulated ones, so surely going to need something else under an insulated pair of trousers?

I have some heavy fleece 3/4 length legging things for when it is really cold; some polyprop leggings which I have cut off to knee length for when it is quite cold and i just wear my pants when it is warm

Choice of skins, merino wool leggings or nothing, depending on the temperature. I very rarely need to wear two layers underneath the shell pants unless it's properly cold.

Usually nothing.

Well; my boots reach up to my calf and socks to my knee. Factor in some boxers and there's only a foot or so of un-insulated leg. If it's brass monkeys I sometimes put on some lightweight 3/4 length Odlo thermals.

i get quite cold in shell pants so have a warmer leggings, and still sometimes wish i had something more. depends on the activitiy and person really. if touring i'll go shell and will be plenty warm enough but pottering about on the lifts i get quite cold in a shell and would tend towards insulated troos

True - its the time on the lifts that is the killer. UNlikely to be a problem when you are boarding.
