Poster: A snowHead

As more of us are having to live of our wits these days without the safety-net of a sick pay regime for those long recuperations from broken bones or similar, has anyone come across compensation type insurance for doing yourself a naughty one whilst skiing? There used to be Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policies - not sure if they exclude skiing - but wondered if anyone has thought/bought this already?

We used this broker, he was very helpful duncan.deaves@chasetempleton.co.uk
The maxium amount you receive is based on your income. You have to be careful if you are a director of a company and take a minimal wage with the rest in dividends, many of the policies will only pay based on your monthly wages and do not take dividends into account.

kewhoward, I have an income replacement policy with these people:
www.cirencester-friendly.co.uk
Chosen for the following reasons:
• Day one accident cover alongside deferred sickness cover (which is great if like me you get a certain amount of paid sick leave but not in the event of an accident outside the workplace).
• Covers most non-professional/non-competitive sports, and also covers on-road motorcycling accidents.
• Cover continues until retirement age if injury/illness forces you to give up work.
• Some of the premiums form a small investment which you receive when the policy expires.

kewhoward, lots and lots of ASU polies around at the moment, just make sure you read the policy carefully before buying to make sure you understnad what you are buying. I'd recommend using a broker down the advised sales route rather than risk an online/telephone non advised sale.

roga, and for the employed, as not everyone has a sick pay scheme, and some who do can't claim sick pay if they have an accident outside of work,(or pick up an injury when skiing) Going from full wage to SSP can be a big shock if you're the only earner, or a reliant on the income to pay the mortgage.

Hells Bells, thanks for explaining - I didn't realise some people didn't have a sick pay scheme if employed, is that legal?

roga, absolutely. Full-time employed people are eligible for statutory sick pay only, which is around £75 per week. If like me, your mortgage alone is considerably more than this, you need insurance in the event of not being able to work through sickness or injury.
