Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ski binding brakes

Hi, does anyone know if it's possible to just change the brakes on ski bindings? I have some pretty decent bindings that I haven't used much and would like to transfer them to some fat skis. The width underfoot would increase by about 25mm and I've read that you can heat and bend them but that sounds a bit dodgy to me. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

Pablito, welcome to SH's, yes you can just change the binding brakes and/or have them "bent" around to fit a wider ski. However go to a good binding and ski tuning person, I am sure Spyderjon from Jon's ski tuning will be along soon to give you lots of good advice.

It does also kind of depend on how old and what make of bindings, I have some great bindings but they are over 25 years old Shocked Shocked wink

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Most modern bindings can easily be fitted with wider brakes. Which binding are they?

Thanks. Enjoying the site so far. Bought them for a season I did in 05/06 and they are Salomon S90 Ti I think and they have the diagonal release. I quickly upgraded my skis and have hardly used them but they have been stored correctly with the DIN settings backed off and well greased. I am pretty light for 6ft at 75kgs and can't see why I'd need a new pair with DIN settings of up to 16!! I don't intend on jumping 60ft cliffs or eating that many pies!

I'm pretty sure these fit: http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_53_430_431&products_id=1530

Telemark Pyrenees are v.good to deal with so if you email them they'll comfirm.

One thing Salomon did good with is keeping the brakes vaguely compatible even with older bindings.

Pablito, are the bindings on a plate?

The bindings aren't mounted on a plate. Thanks guys, I'll check them out when I get to my apartment. I'm working away at the moment but will be in touch if I need the brakes. Cheers.
