Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chateau d'Oeux, aged 12, with the most glorious English ski instructor, Seb. Lots of side-stepping, lots of white-outs and my first ever ciggie! We were there during the balloon festival, stayed in an authentic Swiss chalet, a truely magical experience and I was hooked!

Managed to barter my poor parents into a second trip the following year, to Madonna di Campiglio, and then years of deprivation! Skint student days, many distractions and, horror of horrors, I almost forgot the joys of skiing!!! Thankfully a work colleague pestered me into going again in 2000 and it all came back to me. So here I find myself, a total addict.....worse than any drug this is!!! ( and almost as expensive) Laughing

The first time? Heck, I can't remember not having skis. Old photos reveal a 4y/o bundle of woolen clothes on skis. Then years of pottering, trips, touring, climbing, only a couple days of formal instruction before this century.

1995-Flaine, awful weather, rain, thunder, hail sleet, and loads of new snow. Most of resort closed, but not the nursery sl;opes, son no excuse for us. Then on Friday, a glorious day, skied all the way down the Serpentine in the aftermoon, vin chaud halfway down(?) the day dreams are made of. Permanently hooked . snowHead Laughing Madeye-Smiley Exclamation Exclamation

School ski trip to Malcesine (above Lake Garda) in 1981 (I think). We were snowbound in Gatwick and had to sleep rough in the airport. Turned out that there was more snow in the airport than up the mountain. Ski lesson with Italian instructor who kept refering to something called a Noplough. Confused Didn't find out till the next day what he meant. Then two days in a blizzard. Basically rubbish and I didn't really see what all the fuss was and didn't go for another 11 years at Xmas in Puy Saint Vincent (£250 for everything apart from food and booze Madeye-Smiley ). Brilliant sunshine, great snow, after a shakey start (well I was very very rusty) I fell in love with it and haven't looked back!

Piancavallo, late 70's, School trip. Outside the hotel flat "car park" put skis on travelled at what seemed speed of sound (bearing in mind it was a flat garden) did not know how I was going to stop, fell down and felt that I should wait til the morning and have proper instruction.

I will never forget my first view of the nursery slopes. I honestly thought it was the olympic downhill course. It is amazing how quickly you take to those "Downhill runs"

Loved that holiday and every one since including the one with the broken leg!!

Keep on skiing

17 (a long time ago) to Formigal, £25.00 all in including lift pass.

We got diverted to Barcelona and had a 10 hour wait for the coach.

As all 17 year olds do we decided to drink the two bottles of Johny Walker we had bought as duty free.

After a 10 hour coach journey to Formigal I still can't drink whisky and we must have been the only teenagers ever to go to Spain and have an alchohol free week (I have made up for it since).

We actualy hired ski -bobs (the bikes with skis instead of wheels) so I didn't even get to ski properly.

As I didn't start skiing until 5 years ago all I can say is what a waste.

Stephen.

Started aged 14 on the dry slope at Llandudno...followed my mothers advice to "keep your skis parallel" and ended up knocking myself unconcious after I tried to schuss from the top. My mother had gleaned this "advice" from watching ski sunday! rolling eyes

I then persuaded my parents that a winter trip to Grindelwald and some proper lessons might be a good idea Cool

Another late starter. 2000 in Soldeu. Having resisted partner's pleas to give it a go for some 13 years ( Shocked ), I gave in. (I always thought it looked dangerous and yet, as he pointed out, I was quite happy to throw myself over fences on a 17 hand horse!).

So he has never, ever let me forget the fact that the very second those skis were on my feet I was totally addicted and first on the nursery slopes every morning to practice before my lessons and on the last lift down at night! I absolutely adore it. Squeezing 2 days skiing in at Morzine this weekend whilst over in Geneva. snowHead

First trip was Les Orres, December 2000. Hooked from day 1. Have just been back there & it's amazing how less steep all those runs look now!! Smile
I managed to blag my way into the "1 week skiing advanced beginner" group in Ski school after a day of intensive lessons at Tamworth.
Hubby, who has been skiing since he was 11, is most put out that he now gets much less rest as he waits for me to catch up!!

Jan 96, Oulu, Finland
I was there as an exchange student. Headed off to the nearest slope (3hrs) with some Canadian friends.

Less than appropriately dressed, jeans and a woolly duffel coat for -25 C and windchill, I was escorted to the top of top of a green slope.
It took more than an hour to come down the first time. (put on skiing, slide slowly across slope into loose snow at the side, fall over, get up, put back on skis now facing opposite direction and repeat numerous times).

When I finished at end of day and changed clothes, my jeans froze so stiff that you could stand them up, and my woolly coat was white. Off to sauna and a roll in the snow for the aching bones. Undeterred, I skied another ten weekends that year.

First time on Ski's ever was Whistler in 2001. We were there for just 2 days after seeing friends in Vancouver... That was enough, bought salopettes/jacket in a late season Vancouver sale on the way home.

The following year was a whole week in Les Arcs. This was preceeded by about 20 hours on dry slope. So I got to the snow with a pretty solid parallel turn.

Then last year was *five* weeks in Whistler again Very Happy

This year we've just had two weeks in La Tania - so in total 7 weeks on skis. I'm pleased with the way I'm skiing, Spankys ladder, Blowhole and Couloir Extreme were all skied pretty comfotably in the last couple of weeks in Whistler (the snow was fantastic which helped a lot !).

Trying desperatly hard to work out how I can run my business from a Chalet Happy

I was 15- school ski trip to Serre Chevalier in 1998. Loads of snow- gorgeous instructor who got taken off us to be replaced by a butch lesbian type who hated us and wanted to see us suffer. Apres Ski was good though, managed to persuade teachers to let us go to the Creperie- SUCKERS- straight down the pub, on the last night the hotel staff were drafted in to hunt us down and get everyone onboard the coach at 3am- remember being found on a roof half cut with an instructor, 34 very poorly young ladies on the coach transfer back to Lyon. Got me hooked!!

Did it ever occur to you that possibly some of your school chums were caught in a more compromising location ?
