Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing in Japan

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello all

I an hoping to combine a few days visit to friends in Tokyo with a week of skiing in Japan.

Can anyone recommend a ski resort that would suit a decent intermediate. I know it's going to be a completely different experience to skiing in Europe or US so really looking to research the resorts re convenience to get to from Tokyo, price and most importantly, range of skiing terrain.

Thank you

Paul

Hakuba or quite a bit further north Hokkaido would be my first thoughts...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Japanese Alps via a Shinkanzen train to Nagano. Book decent skis in advance.

For a more Western (well Aussie) feel and more of a powder experience, Hokkaido.

Second thoughts will follow... Several beers have got in the way... How far are you willing to travel from Tokyo? Are you looking for more on piste or off piste? Do you plan to travel on your own or are you looking to meet other travellers? Are you looking to spend time in ryokan and onsen? How big is your budget? And when? Etc etc Mike Pow might be along in a bit... It's all good 

From Tokyo there's not a lot of difference timewise between travelling by train and bus to Nagano and Niigata on Honshu and travelling by plane and train/bus to Hokkaido. There's a cost difference with the trip to Hokkaido working out more expensive.

I can only speak for Hokkaido and say that the snow is the deepest, lightest, most consistent I've ever skied. You won't be disappointed.

The pitch at Niseko is generally mellow but this affords the intermediate the chance to transition to terrain which is ungroomed that is covered in unconsolidated snow of varying depths.

When do you intend going? The busiest (although that's relative when compared with Europe) and most expensive period is 20 Dec through to 31 Jan.
