Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Deposits for ski hire?

I haven't hired skis for a few years but I am going with beginners this season coming that will be hiring skis. I've been told they are going to have to pay a 200 euro deposit for the skis on top of hire cost. Is this normal? It seems like a lot but I suppose it would stop people stealing them. I'm assuming normal wear and tear won't be looked at but obviously I'll check that with the company before they hire.

Thanks for any info.

Give the hire shop credit card details - seems to be usual in my case and I always hire skis. No money is usually charged provided you return the skis. Even with moderate damage (e.g. scratches on the top sheet, 1p size piece out of the base) I've never lost my deposit.

chelseafc, Usually pre-book on line and so avoid having to do that. Paid for insurance upfront no deposit required. Might be different if you hire once you get there

Sounds odd, and has the potential for you to have to leave 200 euros behind because you are at the end of your holiday and can't contest any damage.

Wherever you are going, there will be other shops which won't have this policy. 200 euros is a lot of money to anyone, especially with all the other costs of a ski trip.

I've only ever had to leave credit card details and some kind of ID with them - I left an expired driving licence with them, always worth having old documents with you for situations like this where if there is an issue you might not get it back. Obviously this is much more of an issue in the back end of beyond with potentially corrupt officials, but it does make it easier to walk away from someone trying to pull a fast one when away from home.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks for the info. I thought it sounded a bit odd, I'll call Monday to have chat and see if I missunderstood. Hopefully it's 200 euros OR a credit card number! Otherwise it'll be a lot of money.
